Good coding 101 book for kids
I got a B.S. in computer science education and a Ph.D. in computer science and am working as a software engineer. I chose this book to teach my son and his friends. This book helps kids create simple games, animations, etc., using Scratch. Kids should at least know how to use Scratch. They should also know concepts like loops, conditional statements, variables, events, and sprites.. This book also explains these concepts but it is very superficial.Your kids don't know them? Don't worry. You can learn all the concepts mentioned above for free on code.org site. I recommend learning the concepts there before starting this book. My son, a fourth grader, and his friend completed the basic concepts on code.org over about 12 hours. (about 6 weeks)This book introduces 18 small projects. Each project consists of about 10 pages. It is structured with step-by-step explanations to complete the basic projects and assignments to add additional features. Before starting each project, you can search for the project on the Scratch website to see what others have done. You can show this to the kids to set goals.Don't expect to learn any algorithms through this book. This book helps kids create sprites and backgrounds on the screen and code them to interact.I highly recommend this book for elementary school students!

a great collection of projects
I'm teaching Scratch to 4th graders and the projects are a good way to get ideas. The projects are not elementary and could be developed more gradually from basic idea to further tweaks. I wish I'd bought the hardcopy instead of the Kindle version, however.

Need the most up to date Edition of this Book--Don't buy an older used one
We had an older edition of this book, but my son ran into problems because of how Scratch 3.0 is different than previous versions. Once we got this book, my son was easily able to work through the projects. I had him write the date on the page when he finished each project. He has used programs like code combat (for python) and Tynker, but he's struggled to get the instruction and directions that he needed. I felt like this book scaffolded his learning much better than using those websites.

Dated but still relevant
Not written in the latest code but it is still relevant to my classroom. The kids love the projects in the book.

Read before buying...
My child was recently introduced to Scratch- a programming language used in his computer programming club. After reading many reviews and discussions with other parents, I invested in this book. I can safely say that the book helped him understand what is required to better his craft in programming. Plus, the book was delivered on time.
