Typically good Tascam Recorder
I use a several Tascam recorders and bought this to fill a gap I had for a small but not miniature recorder. I got the DR-07X rather than the DR-05x as I use the x-y placement of the microphones a lot. Compared to the pre-X models the display colour makes it easier to see. Unfortunately the printing on the menu, quick etc., buttons is still difficult to see in poor light and could be an annoyance to the new user, but one can learn 4 buttons soon enough. The menu system is straightforward for simple record and replay use and is typically Tascam. My intended use is as a stand alone recorder, so the absence of xlr connectors is no problem to me as its bigger siblings can do that job when needed. I don't need it as a usb interface, so havn't tested it. Otherwise its a nice simple recorder - there are of course things that more expensive recorders give you, but its more than adequate for the jobs I need it to do, and the controls are big enough to locate and operate in low light/dark. The audio quality is more than adequate for my uses for it. If I could have docked just half a star for the printing on some of the buttons I would have done, but I think it is something simple that needs thinking about.

Ideal digital compact recorder
Used to record items for inclusion in the local Talking Magazine for the blind. Excelent quality recordings at a reasonable price. This can be used with camera type tripods for hands free operation, thereby eliminating "handling" background noise while recording. I use rechargable batteries which have enough power for a few hours of recording time. (Seperate charger required) Can also be used to record concerts etc with very good results, depending on the acoustics of the venu.

Excellent sound with some annoying features!
It's a very good recorder with a few drawbacks. Firstly, it's not shielded from electrical interference. Leave it near a phone or other electrical appliance and you'll get horrible buzzing noises. I'm also not keen on the flimsy plastic. Doesn't look like it's super durable. Additionally, two accessories are essential: a case and a windshield (if you want to record outside). Having said all this, the quality of the recordings are excellent. The mics seem good quality and you have the option to use an external mic if you want. All in all, very good with a few annoying features - no shielding and plasticky feel.

Great little recorder!
I bought this for general sound recording duties and especially for recording material for sampling. As well as an excellent sound recorder it makes a very good HI Fi sound playback machine, with many potential applications. I run mine from a small cheap power brick - as well as saving batteries this keeps the backlit display on which makes the lcd display easier to read. There is a bit of a learning curve in finding out to use all the features but it is fairly easy to use once have spent some time with it.

Great recorder
I have had a Tascam unit for about 10 years to record live music. But this unit is far superior in function and recording sensitivity. Very easy to use with an easy to read display. Just remember to lock the keys with the side button once recording.

More complicated than it needs to be
Nice compact recorder but there is a learning curve just to get it recording. Have seen simpler models and would have bought one of those in hindsight. However the quality seems okay.

Perfect for song writing
I bought this to record musical ideas and as a lifelong Tascam user this looked perfect, and it is. It’s easy to use, sounds incredible. And if you want it to sound even better just load the file into a DAW and add some EQ and glimmer and you’ll finish that acoustic album in a day :) I also bought it to record band rehearsals so those magic spontaneous moments are preserved to remember the next time. I can’t believe folks complain about the plastic - with all the gear I have to carry it’s lovely that something‘s light. It’s so easy to use as well, nice simple menus etc. Forget the inbuilt speaker though, get a wee aux cable and plug it into a Hi-Fi or use headphones.
