Though set in the small city of Farmington, New Mexico, the story begins in Denver. We meet the hero of the story first, Diego “Kincaid” Anderson, as he completes a mission with his team of former Marines (special forces). Within the first page, I was drawn into the story, and immediately wanted to know more about the man behind the bulletproof vest.Our next stop along this journey is in the bathroom of our heroine Emmalynn Mikaelson, as she prepares for her shift as a waitress in a local bar. She’s wrapping her torso in bandages and putting on makeup, trying to hide the bruises and cuts from the most recent beating she received at the hands of her good-for-nothing husband, Bobby. My heart immediately shatters for this woman as she takes us into the nightmare that is her life with an abusive sociopath. The fear she feels as she tries to serve drinks to the often flirty, sometimes grabby, clientele at Drifter’s Bar - all while the keen eyes of that monster watch her every move, is absolutely palpable.An immediate attraction is felt when Emmalynn and Diego first lay eyes on one another, but Diego has a strict rule about married women, and Emmalynn knows the beating she would receive if she was caught making so much as eye contact another man. Things take a turn for the worse when Bobby sees one of Diego’s crew grab Emmalynn’s hand. The next time Diego sees her is when he is heading to the bathroom, and finds Bobby smacking Emmalynn around in the hallway. Not one to turn his back on a woman in need, Diego steps in and after beating Bobby’s face in, he takes Emmalynn out the back exit and offers her a way out of her nightmare. With the protection of Diego, and the entire Cerberus MC behind her, she finally feels safe enough to take the step she must to start a new life.The road to freedom is paved with thorns. Though the attraction between them is undeniable, Diego takes his time, refusing to push her limits before she is ready. His gentle handling of Em draws you in and makes you burn for him.“If I kiss you now, Em, I’ll never stop.” He takes another step back, and it takes all of my power to not reach out to him. “Answer the phone when it rings,” he says and turns and leaves the room. - Diego -There are several sweet moments that made me swoon, and just the right amount of humor thrown in at just the right time.“Emmalyn,” he says getting my attention. I look up at his smirking face. “I’ll show you my doodle anytime you want.” - Diego -But thoughtless actions, harsh words, and stupid pride get in the way, and the possibility of losing her forever becomes very real. The added tension between club members reaches a boiling point, and the threat to Emmalynn is eminent. Diego and his crew are forced to do what they do best, to protect the woman that they have taken as their own kin.Ms. James takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions as Diego and Emmalynn traverse the difficult and rocky terrain of building a relationship together. Her view on how a relationship like this would play out comes across as devastating, passionate, sweet, sexy, and real. Every emotion Emmalynn or Diego felt, I felt too. Ms. James’ shows an extensive knowledge of military and police actions, as well as an understanding of the criminal justice field that adds to the realism of the story. That being said, though I love and appreciate the realistic approach, it doesn’t always offer the suspense and action that readers crave at the climactic peak of a story. At the point when the danger to Emmalynn and the club was at its peak, the whole altercation ran its course a bit too quick and clean, leaving me feeling a twinge of disappointment. This disappointment is not enough to deter me, though, and I will definitely seek out further works by Ms. James.The amazing storyline, great writing, sexy characters, and steamy love scenes definitely made this book worth reading. I would definitely read it again, and can’t wait to see what happens in book 2 of the Cerberus MC. Thank you, Ms. James….now get back in that writing cave! However working under his watch she knows no matter what she does in the end it will result in a beating. How bad ... that's always different. Her latest beating that has left her wearing hidden bandages was because he found the money she was hiding from him. Her last hope to get out and get away. The three bikers that have been coming into the bar have always been kind to her .. well except for the one who is a creep but the two others were super sweet; Shadow and Kid. Tonight there are four and the one who just walked in ... he has never been with them and she has a terrible feeling about her night and she is right on the money.Diego "Kincaid" Anderson has just taken his team in. Cerberus MC (all former military and an MC that specializes in recon and recovery) has been helping the Denver PD they have found Joselyne Bennett alive which is a huge surprise. Thankfully he won't have to tell his cousin Kaleb the news he thought he was going to; certain his team would find Josie dead if they ever did find her body. Heading over to Drifters to check out the "hot waitress" the boys have been telling her about Kincaid doesn't stand a chance. A tortured soul who not only is broken and battered is still beautiful and also married ... most likely married to the ass that is sitting at the table she can't quit watching with fear in her eyes. One moment changes everything ....I really liked this first release as the characters are right up my alley. There were great descriptions of the additional characters I hope to see more of down the road but I also was confused about Kaleb and Josie. If someone knows if they are from another series let me in on that because most likely I would love that set of releases as well! I also love the fact all of these men are former military. At the end of the book we see the MC come together and bring a strong message to the front of what needs to happen every time a slain soldier comes home. LOVE!On the down side, Emmalyn drove me nuts. I didn't like the fact that she wasn't written as a strong character as I like to see women come out fighting. There were numerous times I wanted Diego to just walk away ... GRRRR. All in all though the writing is solid, it kept me turning the pages and it was a really good read. Its my feeling that this series will only get better. I love how he gained her trust and never let her run far. I love how Emmerlyn was not a doormat after Kinkaid saved her. Yeah she had stuff to deal with after being beaten by her ex. But she didn't just curl up and cry all the time. She took charge of her life and took the steps she needed to overcome all the trauma. I just really enjoyed this book and how it had some suspense as well. Highly recommend!
