what type of battery does it have?

The batteries are NiCd. Starts out strong and long lasting. But if you just plug it in and ignore it, the batteries will soon die. Mine failed completely within a year - very frustrating. This is the nature of Ni-Cads. They have a memory effect. You really need to fully charge it and fully discharge it a couple times when you first get it and should do the same routine every few months. Otherwise the battery life will quickly diminish until failure (a PITA that somewhat outweighs the convenience of this model). I did not do this and, as noted, it was completely dead (did not work at all) within a year. I opened mine up after it died and the battery pack is made of 8 Sub C SC 1.2V 1500mAh NiCd With Tabs wired in series. It's not a pack, so you can't buy a pre-built replacement and just swap it out. You could, however,  buy replacement Sub C batteries and replace if you're handy and don't mind a little soldering. The cost off the replacement batteries would be near equal or greater than a new unit though, so repair is really for those who want a project. If you really want a cordless vac and will use it regularly, you might want to get one with a Lithium Ion battery pack that won't have this problem. But that will cost twice as much.

How long does it last on a full charge? Mine lasts 10 seconds on full power and stops vacuuming effectively, so I'm wondering if mine is defective.

Mine has lasted at least 30 minutes. It may last longer, but that's as long as I've used it. It sounds as if yours is definitely defective.

Does this come with attachments? The description says it does, but the car vac version also says so and customers say that one doesnt.

Yes...two attachments.  One brush, and one crevice tool.

Does this work well? As in the suction? Cheerios, dog hair in the corners, dirt.. off of hardwood floors?

No, absolutely not.  My entire house is parquet.  I would not recommend this dust buster for more than dust.  It has a hard time sucking up wood ash from the lip of my wood stove.  It starts off well, but as soon as you have more than a tbsp (roughly) in the filter, it clogs the filter and stops the suction power.  Very poor design.I have a German Shepard and it doesn't even start to suck up the hair.  It really is not a very well designed piece of equipment.  I would recommend paying a bit more for more.  My carpet cleaner does more vacuuming than this does.
