Are the gears metal or plastic

Plastic. I use mine with a fairly heavy Nikon D700 and old metal lens. It works fine. It's held up well but I need the copy stand only sporadically.

How portable is this copy stand? Would it be easy or at least possible to carry it in airplane luggage?

Maybe possible, one screw in the bottom takes the vertical bar off. Vertical bar is 29", does not fold, collapse, or telescope. Flat portion of stand is 15 3/4" X 18 3/4", again does not fold. Might be possible, seems a little long, but I have seen surprising stuff make it into overheads

Would this connect to a canon rebel? How would I connect this to a camera that screws on to tripods?

I use this with a cannon rebel. The stand has a small plate with the same bolt that tripods have. You connect the camera to the plate using that bolt, then the plate clips onto the stand. It's very secure, and is more then capable of handling the weight of the camera.

I bought this copy stand to photograph artwork and photographs. What's the best lighting set-up to avoid glare?

In general: Use constant light sources rather than flash, they let you see what your results are without resorting to dozens of trial-and-error shots. Broad light sources are, in general, better than small. For 3-D pieces you can even go as far as a "tent" made out of thin white cloth with the lights several feet outside the tent and a hole for the lens. Set lights at an angle to reflect the light someplace other than "up the lens". About 45 degrees works well in many casesFor some curved surfaces you may want to use something black to act as an "anti-light".If you need a pre-packaged setup, 2 medium sized "soft box" type lights at about 45 degrees on the right and left placed a few feet away from the subject tend to work pretty well.
