## Questions & Answers

**Q: I purchased this item almost 8 weeks ago 8 August 2014 will i receive this item in my lifetime or will i need to leave this item in my will for my kid**
A: Purchased SB6183 a week ago, My invoice says estimated shipping between Oct 1 to 10th. What was your estimate date? If i don't see any update by Oct5th i'm going to cancel my order and stick with SB6141.

**Q: Does ARRIS/Motorola support firmware upgrades for the 6183 via downloads to the consumer's computer?
If not, why not?**
A: If there are upgrades, you will be able to download, as you would for any piece of computer hardware. The cable companies do NOT have any control over what you download or what modem you use. It may not work if it's not using the right protocols, but they aren't going to exclude any that do work. And just about ANY gateway/router hardware will work. Again, the cable company has no control whatsoever over what router/firewall you are using.

**Q: What is the difference between this modem, the SB6183, and the SB6180?**
A: The SB6180 enables channel bonding of up to 8 downstream channels and 4 upstream channels, which allows an operator to offer their customers advanced multimedia services with data rates of well over 300 Mbps in DOCSIS mode and 400 Mbps in EuroDOCSIS mode for downstream and 120 Mbps upstream. The SB6183 has 16 download & 4 upload channels. Download speeds up to 686 Mbps and upload speeds up to 131 Mbps based on your Cable provider service. That is the main difference I could find. I hope it helps.

**Q: do most users need such a fast cable modem? I have comcast performance....is this over kill or futureproofing with docis 3.1 on horizaen.**
A: DOCSIS 3.1 is here, true. And the first set of cable modems using the standard will offer some improvements. As with many technologies, they don't saturate the market overnight. In most cases the availability and maturity of a technology in the marketplace can take years - as much as 3 to 5 years. Even if 15 to 20 percent of the market goes to DOCSIS 3.1 in the first or second year, that says 80 percent hasn't. Future proofing your technology is nice, but a measure of sensibility should be used too. I went to the ARRIS SB6183 knowing that my ISP service is 200 Mbps. It allows a considerable cushion for growth. If my ISP's average speeds jumped to 500 Mbps, and I were to consider another cable modem upgrade, I would focus on a faster cable modem that uses the DOCSIS 3.1 standard or any newer and more powerful standard - allowing me to benefit from the latest standards and speeds. The DOCSIS 3.0 standard may well be nearing its End-of-Life in 2 to 3 years. Therefore, I would see no value going to a 1.4 Gbps DOCSIS 3.0 modem.

leave it ALONE more TROUBLE than its worth problem seller 1/10

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great modem - increases connection stability - note on setup.
*by on Reviewed in the United States 22 March 2015*

Pros:- Great speeds- Stable- Easy to setup (see note below)Cons:- Runs warm- Bright LED lightsI bought this to replace an aging DOCSIS 2.0 modem I had been renting from Time Warner Cable (and had, over the years, paid enough in rental fees by many modems - gulp). It works great with the TWC service and based on standards and prior experience, I see no reason it wouldn't work with all major providers. As others have noted, you get a minor "speed boost" over older modem - this is not due to an increase in sheer maximum speed, since that is set by the cable company, but rather due to the ability of this modem to bond up to 16 channels maintaining the maximum speed more stably (instead of the speed bouncing up and down). The only thing that troubles me about this device is the fact that it does get fair warm to the touch - so make sure it's in a well ventilated area. The blue LEDs in the front panel are also very bright - and even if you wanted to cover them up, you can't effectively block the light as it comes through the main body (sides and back) of the device which cannot be covered due to the need for ventilation. This isn't a problem for me since I keep it in a "wiring cabinet" with plenty of ventilation and a door to block the light, but I can see it being an issue for some.Note on setup - I attempted and failed to be able to use TWC's "auto-setup" so I called their support line. They told me there was an "outage" in my area so while they would enter the data, I wouldn't be able to use the modem until the outage was repaired. This was curious to me, since my internet worked perfectly with the old modem not 30 seconds before. So, with the guy on the phone (without him telling me to), I unhooked this new modem and re-plugged in the old one...suddenly he tells me the outages is fixed and he's able to provision the new modem. Strangely, as soon as he enters the new modem, the "outage" reappears. So again, I switch modems without him telling me to (now having the new one plugged in) and boom, outage gone and new modem works like a charm. Long and short of it? If TWC doesn't see the modem they have in their system plugged in and powered on, there's an "outage" and they can't install a new modem. So if you can, plug in both your existing modem and this new one at the same time (maybe in different rooms) and they'll be able to set the new one up with no issues - in fact, auto-provisioning may work.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ good download
