Thank you for your question and interest in our mortar and pestle set.

The design (i.e. dimensions, granite type, porosity level, density grade, roughness length, mortar thickness, mortar capacity etc.) is done in Germany. The actual granite raw material and manufacturing is carried out in the north mountains of Baoding city, Hebei province, China.

I'm a bit concerned, I was about to purchase this product but you can't be serious about this cleaning and seasoning process?  This is ridiculously complicated.  I'm looking for something to help prepare my cats medications...  Are you expecting that customers who are strictly looking for a product to use with medications will magically be aware ahead of time about these instructions and have all of these on hand already?

i don't have any of these items on hand and this whole process turned the simple idea of buying a replacement mortar and pestle from receiving an item, washing it out, then waiting for it to dry then using it into an insane process...  Now I have to go out and buy white rice, cloves of garlic, cumin, and pepper? And then go through all these steps as well.

I think you need to make it explicitly clear up at the top of the product listing you CANNOT use this as it is when it arrives and you have to go through a cleaning and seasoning process prior to usage.

I need a new mortar so I can grind up my cat's meds when we wake up in the morning and this one can be here overnight and it looks fantastic.  If i had ordered it and opened the directions and found this nonsense out I would have been furious.  I need a new mortar/pestle to grind up my cat's meds in the morning and if I had ordered this thinking I could rely on it and then received it and counted on being able to use it and saw that I had to somehow magically obtain all these items first thing in the AM I don't have a car which is one reason I use amazon)  I don't know what I'd end up doing.

I can't express how disappointed I am with this discovery

What if i don't have any cumin? What can be substituted?

The first mortar like this I purchased was in Mexico. My native friends I was staying with cured the mortar with just rice and it turned out great. I did the same thing with this one. My opinion the important thing is to grind the inside of the mortar well enough as to not have rock pieces grind off into your sauces or ground spices and the rice alone does the job.
