Superb product.
I essentially dictate for a living. I have, literally, a pile of broken/dysfunctional recorders by my desk. After having lost a number of dictations on cheap machines, I purchased the BM-575. First, the transcriptionist was very happy. She can actually hear the words, especially around the areas where the recorder is clicked on and off. This means way fewer missed words and corrections. When I accidentally dropped the machine, there were no problems. That's usually the end of the cheap ones. I am very pleased and its worth the extra money.Jeff. Alaska

Disappointing Product but Great Customer Service from Amazon
The rewind button, which separates this dictation device different from the typical $50 tape recorder (those that do extensive dictating know what I mean) broke after about 1 hour of use. This is the only portable micro-cassette recorder on the market I could find with a one thumb control (record, rewind, play) that allows to go from rewind to play by just releasing the control via a spring action -- necessary for efficient dictation. I had used the earlier version (Sony bought out Lanier) for 10 years without a problem. I returned the product for a very efficient refund. I think this is the first defective item I have purchased on Amazon (no fault of Amazon or the Company that shipped the device), and I was pleased with how the refund process worked.

Microcassette Tape Recorder
In today's digital age, this is a rather primitive device that has served me very well, me being a rather primitive dictator of text for transcription. This has a metal case and is more rugged and durable than the many plastic recorders out there. If for some reason you want to use microcassette tapes, I recommend this machine.

Two Stars
I have owned three Lanier Microcassette Recorders over the past thirty years. It was everything they advertised it to be. When I went to buy one this time they were no longer being made. They were replaced by this Sony BM-575. It isn't half the recorder that the Lanier was. You can't record in noisy areas without picking up all the background noises. The plaback is nowhere as clear as the Lanier. If I could find a Lanier right now I would buy one and throw this Sony away.

and it works great when he wants to take it out of town ...
I purchased this for my boss. We are very old school, and he still dictates everything to me. It is very small and compact, and it works great when he wants to take it out of town with him, or just walk around the office with it. We have had no problems with it so far, and we have had it for approximately six months.

Worked for only 3 months
This item worked fine for 3 months, then the microphone (for the playback) stopped working; then the micro-cassette cover fell off; and then eventually it wouldn't record at all.
