## Questions & Answers

**Q: can you plug this directly into your modem and then connect (wired) to router and pc etc?**
A: Odd that both answers managed to give a completely wrong answer (or, rather, an answer that ignores the reality of the situation).

Yes, you can do that, in the sense that the switch doesn't have a dedicated input, so you can connect an Ethernet cable from your modem's output to a port on the switch, then another cable from another port on the switch to the input on the router, then a third cable from the router's output to a third port on the switch, and it should function the same as if you connected the router's input directly to the modem's output, assuming you don't actually plug anything else into it.

However, and this is where the other 2 somehow managed to get the answer completely wrong, neither the switch, nor a modem that isn't also a router, is going to function as a DHCP server. As far as consumer devices go, that will require a router. So the above, which is a total waste of 2 of the 5 ports (as well as requiring an otherwise unnecessary cable), is the only sense in which the answer to your question is "yes".

In every other sense, including, presumably, the way you actually meant it, the answer is "no", because something needs to act as a DHCP server for all of the devices connected to the switch. And, in your case, that thing is going to be a router.

Put another way, your modem, if not acting as a router, is capable of assigning 1, and only 1, IP address. That's why a modem that's not acting as a router has 1, and only 1, active Ethernet port. A router functions as a DHCP server, which means that it's capable of assigning IP addresses to other devices that connect to it.

Put even more simply, only 1 device can get to the Internet via a modem that isn't functioning as a router. Multiple devices can get to the Internet via a router. Therefore, logic dictates that you make the router the 1 device that can access the Internet via the modem and then connect everything else to the Internet through that. A switch like this isn't going to remove that limitation. So the router needs to be the only thing connected to the modem's output, so it unquestionably receives the single opportunity to access the Internet. Then a switch like this can be used to connect other devices to the router's output, since, unlike the modem, it's capable of granting multiple devices connected to it access to the Internet.

**Q: can this be used to boost an ethernet sinal over 300ft of cable**
A: All switches act as repeaters or "boosters" to utilize your term.
Cat-5 is limited to 100 meters which is about 330' .
In the past I have placed switches at about 200' distance in large factory warehouses to run long distances. They recompile the wave length as attenuation starts around the 300' mark.

**Q: This would be what I need for Google wifi mesh, since it only has one ethernet port?**
A: Yes, you can use this to connect multiple drives through that one Ethernet point. They will then share that one port and its bandwidth.

**Q: Hi, i'm dumb dumb. so out of the 5 ports, one port gets connected to the primary router? i don't see the desginated port for the host router. thank y**
A: It doesn’t make a difference. I plugged mine into the #1 port to my router but this will sort out where the signal is coming from and repeat it to the other ports for you

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Inexpensive Switch with Expensive Quality Performance
*by B***R on July 1, 2019*

First off, I would like to state that I am participating in a program where the cost of the switch was refunded for the ability to review it honestly here on Amazon. The honesty of my review is NOT impacted by receiving this switch for free. Rather an am an Independent IT professional who takes opportunities to review items for the greater good of the IT community. With that said, I purchased this switch and within 3 days it had arrived on my doorstep via Prime shipping. The switch was securely packaged in a standard Amazon box with some standard air bubble/air packs. If I was shipping to a customer, I probably would have added more packing material in, but that is just me. Inside the Amazon box was an Aumox labeled box that contained the switch and standard power cord for it.I was pleasantly surprised to see that this switch is actually a tad smaller than my current Netgear 5-Port (GS105) Gigabit switch. Infact the dimensions are significantly smaller on the Aumox vs Netgear with the dimensions as follows (3.93 x 2.51 x 0.9 in versus 4.02 x 1.06 x 3.9 in) respectively. The Aumox is also noticeably lighter at 0.53lb vs the Netgear at 0.66lb. With that said, you would expect a more cheaper feeling build quality of lesser quality materials than the NetGear. However that isn't the case. The Aumox switch has a very sturdy and solid feel to it and not some plastic breakable feel. In fact if I were to recommend this switch to some of my customers based on that information alone, I would have no problem recommending AND installing the Aumox switch for clients due to it's professional and solid build quality.Once the switch was unboxed and plugged in, I disconnected my Netgear GS105 from my office network and installed this Aumox. Keep in mind this isn't designed to replace a managed switch with VLAN capabilities like I have for my dedicated lab. Rather on my main office desk outside of my office's lab space, I have had a Netgear gigabit switch for the simple purpose of connecting an HP MFP Laserjet Pro printer, this laptop I'm typing on, my dedicated internet router, and two additional ports for testing IT equipment. So this switch was designed for circumstances like this. What I noticed after installing this switch was that I simply did not have any problems. Immediately everything on the network was connected and talking to each other . I did some initial simple testing of network/internet speeds with Fast.com and Speedtest.net, both of which produced nearly identical results between the Netgear and Aumox. I ran and re-ran these tests with each subsequent test showing no gain (but no loss) in speed over the Netgear switch. As of the writing of this review, I have not disconnected the Aumox switch. It has been performing perfectly and I want to do more long range testing with it to push it to it's limits. But so far I am very impressed with this switch to the point that I would recommend this for purchased by my clients immediately. I am not sure if Aumox is a startup company or a lesser known well established company. However they have put out a solid piece of networking equipment with this switch. I would love to see them produce some enterprise grade switches that I would love to test to see how they stack up to HP Enterprise and Netgear Enterprise switches. Before I end my review I have only one complaint about this switch. Due to how my desk is setup, I wish the AC plug was in the rear of the switch with the Cat5e RJ45 ports remaining in the front. This is NOT a complaint about the performance or build quality. But more of a personal preference on how my desk is setup. But for the price of the switch, I can happily live with that complaint and I think you could too!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Value!
*by C***R on November 24, 2019*

Ok, this thing is awesome! I work with lots of data equipment and CCTV stuff. Trying to find a good, solid switch for cameras on a "home" budget is hard, but these guys make it easy! I usually work with Meraki in a business setting and those are some of the best available switches out there...Provided you have lots of $$$ to spend! At home I use whatever I happen to find because I use my house as a test bench for different products throughout the price spectrum. Usually the stuff I use at home is what I would tell my friends and family to use. When I saw a 78W POE switch for less than $40, I wasn’t expecting much but figured Id give it a try.I set this up in line with a Meraki switch so I could easily measure throughput. I used this in their “V-LAN” mode (which isn’t really V-LAN, but it does isolate the 4 POE ports), and plugged in a 4K PTZ POE camera into each port. I used the WAN as a back haul to the Meraki switch.Gbp;[, ‘bI was able to run all four cameras in patrol mode, at full resolution, with not issues. Here’s my highlights:1- I LOVE THE POWER SUPPLY! This thing has a built in power supply, so all you need is the included cord. No giant power brick, no weird proprietary connectors; just a cord!2- ~15 watts / port is perfect for me. Most high end home network POE cameras only use about 3-6 watts, so there is no problem at all using this for your home security system.3- The “V-LAN” feature is really good for home security cameras. You can keep your cameras separated, which helps keep your bandwidth in check.4- This is an UNMANAGED switch, so its pretty much plug and play. This is good because there aren’t much in the form of directions in the box. This is completely fine because there’s really not much to these switches.5- The switch is in a sold metal housing and even has ears for rack mounting included. This thing is really sturdy! It’s a bit heavy, but that is to be expected considering that it has an almost 80w power supply inside.6- Speaking of heavy.. The rack ears that they include can also be used to mount this on the wall or under your desk.7- It can work with 115v or 220v- So this can travel with you 😊In short, I would not only strongly recommend this switch if you need a powerful POE switch for you cameras, or IP phones, but I would also recommend this even if you aren’t using POE right now. For the price, you just cant beat it!
