Enjoy the great illustrations and take the text with a grain of salt.

I have now reached the point of my architectural interests where architectural dictionaries are forming part of my diet. I have discovered that most vary significantly from the others. Thus far, I much prefer the mostly biographical architectural dictionary by James Stevens Curl. This dictionary by Ernest Burden is very curious in its way. It appears that Mr. Burden was paid by the number of entries in the dictionary. As a result, where one entry would suffice in a normal dictionary, there are frequently multiple iterations of the same entry with only the slightest differences, leaving the reader to wonder if these are actually different things or if these are merely synonymous with each other. This depends, of course, on the highly personal interests of Mr. Burden which include all things Green, historic preservation, and Technology. It does become tedious after some time and frequently amusing. There are also innumerable errors and glitches in the text. For example Indian architecture is given four definitions - Buddhist, Hindu, Hindu-Buddhist, and Jain of which each are assigned particular beginning and ending dates, as if these religions no longer exist, but have left their temples which ceased to be constructed centuries ago. Never mind the Sikhs, Muslims, Mar Thoma Christians, etc. or the secular works of architecture in India. In any event, if you purchase this dictionary by all means enjoy the great color photographs (although they are quite small) and don't take the text too seriously.

Perfect for writers

A great book for interested dilettantes and beginners; as for writers it is a must-have.

Illustrated Dictionary of Architecture 3rd. Edition is a "Must Have"

The third edition of this publication represents a major improvement through the use of color photographs. Both previous editions were already excellent resources to learn about the multi-facetted issues of architecture. I recommended this book to my students in the Interior Architecture Program at Mount Ida College and at the Boston Architectural College. The book covers all relevant terms specific to the field of architecture and is a "must have" for all who are interested in the subject, study it, or are already practicing. The lay-out and organization is very clear and the information, accompanying the illustrations, is brief but precise. The change from black/white illustrations to full color prints is a major improvement. It not only makes the representation of the listed building components more realistic - compared to previous editions - but also compliments the excellent photographic skills of the author.

The best of its kind ever published.

Dictionaries are typically fine for identifying meanings ofterms, but are generally dull and lifeless. This full-coloredition is spectacular. The author has selectedthe most visually stunning examples in every categoryand created a remarkably satisfying study guide tothe art, technology, and history of architecture. Belongsin every art and architecture library and on every architect'sand architecture student's bookshelf.Fred Stitt, ArchitectDirector, San Francisco Institute of Architecture
