2010: Moby Dick

This movie is another gem By The Asylum.This is a very modern telling of the conflict between Ahab and Moby Dick. No "whaling" here.This involves nuclear subs and the false accusations by an admiral who believes a crazed Ahab is sinking ships and killing people. He's trying to capture and even kill Ahab throughout the story.Moby Dick happens to be a relic whale that is not extinct. We don't know how old Moby is, but he's 400 feet long; is terribly scared; and has many spears and harpoons still stuck in his skin from 1,000's of years of man's attempt to capture and kill him. Moby has a tremendous hatred for any vessel he encounters and is responsible for many sinkings and deaths.One of Moby's attacks was on a submarine that Ahab was on as a young sailor. Ahab was one of 2 survivors. Ahab lost half a leg and Boomer lost his hand. Years later, Ahab is captain of a nuclear submarine that he designed with the purpose of locating and killing Moby Dick. That Admiral assigns Captain Boomer to find Ahab. Even orders Boomer to kill Ahab because he thinks Ahab is responsible for malicious conduct which I mentions earlier.About 25 years later, Ahab is finally finding Moby Dick along with the help of a lady scientist who specializes in whale identification and calling them with the equipment she invented with her assistant, Actually, Ahab commandeers her, her assistant and her equipment. They objected until she got to actually hear and see Moby Dick herself.Does Moby Dick click or sing in his soundings? No. There is a mysterious void or hole when the 400 foot long beast of a whale is near.I don't want to give away the rest of the story. You can count on Moby still being a deadly bully and conflicts between the men folk. There will be deaths and there will be survivors.There is no graphic horror. But there is some bad language.

This review is for the DVD release of '2010: Moby Dick' released by The Asylum.THOUGHTS/CONCLUSIONS:The movie starts off well enough. The main problem is the last 20 minutes. It gets completely ridiculous at that point. 'Moby Dick' has some decent buildup even if it is preposterous. Obviously they were attempting to follow the plot of the classic novel by Herman Melville and update it for modern times.I can live with all the plot holes. I can live with not following naval procedures. I can live with the illogical behavior of the whale. What I can't live with is when you start to tell a story and then don't finish telling it. The main characters realize that there is a reason for Moby Dick's illogical behavior but the movie never explains why. It appears as if the director wanted to tell the story of 'Moby Dick' but just sort of lost his way. When we get to the final act, it seems as if the director said... "Screw it!... We are out of money!"... Let's just finish this thing."I'm fine with a 500 ft. long whale. After all, this is a monster movie. I'm not fine with it jumping around on land. The whale is low budget CGI and it doesn't look great to begin with. It doesn't look terrible either. It could have been worse.The scenes on the island at the end just killed what little respect I had for the movie. I don't know what happened here. It seems as if the production team just gave up at this point. How exactly did that girl survive after getting blown to smithereens? I guess somebody had to live so that the story could have a happy ending.RATING:This is probably more of a 2 1/2 star effort but I'm giving it 3 stars because I'm feeling generous today. The first half is actually decent but you forget that when you get to the disappointing finale.I'm not sure why I'm giving this 3 stars... it's a lost opportunity.I'd give the first half of the movie 4 stars but the second half 1 star, thus my average of 2 1/2 stars.Recommended for people who like 'cheezy' CGI monster movies.IS THERE A SEQUEL: Not that I'm aware of as of the time of this review. I won't be holding my breath for '2020: Moby Dick'.

Ask yourself folks: A direct-to-video movie about Moby Dick starring Barry "I played George Washington once but now I'll do anything to pay for my Malibu beach house" Bostwick and Renee "I'm not lesbian but I'll let you believe I'm lesbian if it will pay for my collagen injections" O'Connor, and you're expecting Cannes Film Festival quality here?Gimme a break. It is what it is, and it's not as putrid as some reviewers here would have you believe. I bought it for five bucks and I'm damn glad I did.Hey, you know what? This is a bad movie. But so was "Journey to the Center of the Earth" with Brendan "I need to fire my manager NOW" Fraser, and I shelled a helluva lot more than five bucks to see that puddle of cinematic 3D puke."2010: Moby Dick" is as entertaining a bad movie as bad movies get. If you compare Barry Bostwick in this to Raymond Burr in the first "Godzilla" movie, and Renee O'Connor to, well, I guess anything Jennifer Aniston has done, including the original "Leprechaun" movie, you're on the right wavelength for "2010: Moby Dick" and you'll enjoy it just fine.It seems others here would compare "Citizen Kane" to any random "Chucky" movie and that's just not fair.Bad movies need love too!Three stars from me and here's hoping Bostwick pops up in another Asylum flick soon.

I liked part of this movie, the part that didn't include the ending. It would have been a great monster movie if it wasn't for the over-acting of Barry Bostwick, and if they hadn't decided to go that island. I mean seriously, they couldn't kill it with torpedoes and a nuclear bomb, so what made them think they could take him on with rifles and machine guns? Hey, why didn't they just spit at him, would have had the same effect. I usually enjoy watching movies with some kind of monster in it, even low budget ones have a certain appeal for me, so I guess that's why I'm giving it a 3 rather than the 2 that it should have.

From Asylum Pictures - the company that brought you 'Titanic 2', 'Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus' and ...erm... 'Nazis at the Centre of the Earth' - comes a modern retelling of Herman Melville's classic novel.Now I don't want to insult anyone's intelligence here (that's the film's job) but if you're expecting an intelligent and psychologically penetrating reinterpretation of the original source material you've come to the wrong place. (Just look at the DVD cover: it tells you everything you need to know about this turkey.)Buuuuuut(!), if you're a fan of Melville's work and - more crucially - have a sense of humour then you could do a hell of a lot worse than this travesty. There's a fantastic drinking game for English Literature students in this movie. (Rennee O'Connor's opening line, "Call me Michelle"; the remote Typee atoll and the grave of Father Mapple; the nuclear missile 'Fedallah'; etc)If you want the definitive film version of 'Moby Dick', check out John Huston's magnificent 1956 film. If you want to see all the bits Huston left out, check out Franc Roddam's impressive 1998 TV mini-series with Patrick Stewart. When the takeaway Pizza arrives and your third beer calls, check out this production. Think of it as knowing homage rather than dumbing down, otherwise you'll go crazy. Trust me, I KNOW.
