Didn't have any trouble removing it from the top, but it was just as easy from underneath. Not sure about the 2004 compatibility. Remember not to over tighten it, and apply a little oil to the seal before installing. Also make sure that the old seal from the previous filter isn't stuck to the block. **Q: Does anybody know the diameter?** A: I use this item on my '91 Miata and son's '03 Protege5.
