Great entry level TBC
This unit fixed 90% of the problems i was having as far as screen jitter and tearing. DO NOT buy the gray/blue un-labeled knock off of this! (also sold on Amazon) I bought that one because it was slightly cheaper, BIG MISTAKE, it's total copy cat junk. This AVT-8710 did the trick for me in recording home movies onto my PC through a capture device. This device is easy, just plug and play and it will do a lot to fix errors. I am not an AV techie and I cannot attest to how well this works compare to other TBC's but I can say it worked for me.

Does not work well with 90's and newer VHS/BETA/LASERDISC players.
I've heard good things about this TBC, so I gave it a shot. And was disappointed. Controls and ease of use are good. But, this does not work nicely with my Sony EDV-9000 Beta player. Nor does it work too well with any of my early to mid 90's VHS and laserdisc equipment. The EDV 9000 was the worst though. Here are the problems with this TBC. -Very bad ghosting. Occurs randomly. -Frame drops. This is not from the disc write, but from the actual TBC unit. -Frame bending. The top of the image frame is bent to the right which causes the image capture to lose about 5-8% of the capture space. This all occurred while connecting my hardware via s-video. Not sure what composite looks like, but I stay away from composite connections since s-video produces superior image quality. Not recommended for analog equipment from 90's and forward. I've heard it works fine with older equipment, perhaps 80's beta and vhs players. Will have to go back to ebay and find a more industrial TBC.

Great but needs some babysitting with damaged tapes
This reasonably priced TBC will take video tape playback that is flagging badly and fix the timing to eliminate the problem either completely, or leave a tiny bit of green-shift at the top of the video on really bad EP VHS tapes. The improvement is great enough that I'll be re-ripping tapes that I had converted to MPG2 before buying this device. If you're capturing VHS or Beta video to PC, this device will greatly improve your results. The only negative is that an extreme video glitch can stick the TBC in color-bar mode, requiring that the reset button be pressed. This is only an issue with badly damaged tapes.

Small but powerful!
Great little TBC. I use this unit in my tape transfer & duplication business to burn VHS tapes to DVDs. it cleans up any tape jitters and allows for some brightness, sharpness, contrast, tint and color control as well.

This works great as a TBC and frame restorer
This works great as a TBC and frame restorer. I haven't tested it with with copy protected VHS tapes or DVDs. Out of curiosity I did test the device against my cable box and ROKU-2 and find it honors the do not record flags. If the latter is your main reason for considering this unit, look elsewhere. It does an excellent job of TBC and restoring color signals. I did not see ghosting or distortion of the top of the frame as others have described. The color bar generator is great for setting up monitors and TV screens. Support of various standards is a real plus since I have used it to duplicate PAL recordings. It does what it says it will do, maybe not what you would hope it would do.

Item was used and defective
I purchased this item, Amazon indicated it was sold by Kellards and filled by Amazon. When I received the item it was clearly a used item. The item packaging was a plain white box with nothing on the outside, to indicate what was in the box. The items in the box were not well wrapped, cords were wrapped around adaptors rather than being neatly tied up. I did some initial tests and it seemed to work OK, so I notified Amazon and they did give a partial refund since the item was used. I did appreciate that very much. After using the item for several days I noticed some significant issues, ghosting on the screen and white static even when the VCR was just feeding a blue screen while no tapes were playing. After some research via google I found this is a common defect with the 8710, particularly those manufactured around 2011. I don't know for sure when this one was made, but it sure seems like what I got was a refurb that was never properly repaired (Despite the fact that Amazon's site lists it as new). I have sent this back for a full refund and as Kellards appears to be the only way to purchase this on Amazon I'm going to purchase another from B&H, hopefully a new one that isn't prone to the defects like the one I tried already. Note this review is less about the item itself and more about feeling deceived by Kellars/Amazon and being delivered a clearly used and defective product when what I was expecting was a new one.

Excellent performance. Corrects perfectly frame syncrhonization
I'm using this with a composite switcher that saved me from buying a video mixer. So I got two video cameras and digital media player and a dvd player connected to a 4 input one output switcher (composite) and the output goes to the time base corrector. VOILA! I just switch the input and the time base corrector synchronizes the frames plus I can adjust color, tint, sharpness, etc. I set up for increased color and decrease light. The only thing you have to be aware of is that it is sensible to magnetic fields or transformers, had to play around with cables and positioning of the components to remove some ghosts frames that were appearing. You can trust this device is perfect! Well a positive update. After replacing the out video cable from the unit to the encoder. From regular rca video cable to a high quality shielded video cable the ghosts and video echo disapeared. The instructions said so, but I read that part after replacing the video cable. Now the image is perfect! That's why moving from 4 stars to 5 stars. Great pr
