If you got a CoffeeJack, you probably realized quickly that the average tamper is too large to use with it. It's surprising hard to find one that's the right size - most start at 50cm and go up from there. At 45.5 cm, this tamper perhaps could be a half-cm larger, but it fits comfortably and leaves a negligible amount of unpressed grind around the edges. I found it quite easy to press, check with a spoon edge that no loose grind was left, and quickly re-press if needed. Often one press gets it just fine. I was happy to find this not just for the size, but the very good price, and the fact that it's stainless steel which I prefer to aluminum, which most of the cheap tampers are made of. If you need a smaller-than-average tamper of good quality at a good price, this could be the one you're looking for.

This tamper is a bit too small to fit the Virtuo pods from side to side, but no worries, it works just fine. Don't tamp the coffee in your pods like you would an espresso basket, or you won't get good water penetration when brewing. It takes a little while to hit the perfect grind and tamping pressure, but when you do it's a beautiful thing. My pods work exactly like store bought, but taste many times better as I'm using my own fresh custom roast. Many of the store bought pods have been sitting around on shelves for too long and have a rancid smell. Not mine...not now! Treat yourself to one of these and thank yourself with every cup of Joe from here on out.

Is this necessary for refilling coffee pods? No. Do you need this tamper? Yes! Let me tell you why. I recently got a Nespresso Vertuo machine. Pods came with it so I used those and absolutely loved the coffee I was making. I went to order some more pods and after the sticker shock, decided I would investigate reusing the pods I had. I bought a refill kit that didn’t come with a tamper, so I used the back of the flat scoop and that worked fine up to the point I wanted to refill more than a couple of pods. Refilling isn’t difficult, but it’s time consuming. After cutting off the original seal, you have to clean the pod, dry it or allow it to dry, gather your tools and coffee of choice, scoop in the grounds, clean up any loose coffee, pack the coffee into the pod tightly, place a new seal, and, finally, secure the seal down onto the pod. Again, not complicated, but anything that cuts down on the time spent refilling is worth it. To be able to pack the grounds tightly in the pods in one firm motion with having to manipulate the scoop around the pod 5 or 6 times is SO nice. One and done! So quick and simple. If you’re thinking about refilling your Vertuo pods, don’t skimp on this part of the process. I know it seems unnecessary at first glance, but a small investment for a nicely weighted, appropriately sized tamper will noticeably cut your refill time down.

This little tamper fits my espresso basket perfectly. It is made of very good quality stainless steel. I highly recommend this product.

With Nespresso’s latest price increase for their Vertuo pods, I recently discovered the process of refilling used pods, and the various supplies and devices available here on Amazon. It’s been very effective and as I got more proficient at the process, I saw the need for a proper size tamper, and this one proved to be perfect.
