Watercolor in Motion: How to Create Powerful Paintings Step by Step Paperback – May 29, 2014

After reading the Artist's Watercolor essentials at the library, I decided to buy this book thinking it was a further expansion on the first book. There is new material, however a lot of what was in Essentials is in this book as well. The only difference is that the DVD had more new material, though it too had some of the DVD material from Watercolor Essentials. Since I don't have a copy of the other book, having the repeated information is perfect for my needs.Unlike a lot of other books I have looked at, the Artist explains the brushes that she uses and why. Brush size was one of the things that was frustrating me. She also goes over the paints that she uses, though i had to get used to usage of the term "color" when she talked about the paint.Overall it was a good buy. I would have liked to give the book five stars, but with all the copied information from the previous book i felt i couldn't.

I have a few DVD's showing watercolor how-to and so far, this is the best one.Birgit really explains and shows how she does each technique; nothing done fast nor glanced over. This is the first Video I have ever gone threw that I did not have to stop and repeat on because I just did not get it. What is even better is she is not focusing on her work to the point you are learning "how to reproduce my paintings" versus learning the technique and being able to apply it to your own ideas. I think that is what I love about this DVD the most.In the video, you see exactly how to mix the colors and not only how to apply the paint, when and why but also the water, how much, when and why. No small detail is ignored. Unfortunately, for the more advanced painter some things are probably overkill but that is moot. She is showing you how to go beyond what she painted. Now I am spoiled and will be comparing all future DVD's to this one.Cheryl

As a relatively new watercolor artist who has purchased a number of watercolor books in the past couple years, I find Watercolor in Motion by Birgit O'Connor is quite possibly the best instructional books I've read. It comes with a DVD which is high quality (which is more than I can say for others by different artists), which goes hand-in-hand with the book. The book and DVD cover a number of important areas which include color and color mixing, movement of water and color, washes, texture techniques, and, especially helpful to me--a demonstration of what can go wrong when you go back into a watercolor to try to "fix" it. The DVD demonstrates how to create, step-by-step, the techniques which are covered in the book. Ms. O'Connor is one of those rare individuals who has the ability to explain things in simple, concise terms, which a new artist will find refreshing. I only wish this book had been available when I was first introduced to watercolors. It would have saved me a lot of frustration as well as watercolor paper. I would highly recommend this book.

This book is packed with indispensable guidance and information for improving watercolor paintings. Extremely useful for those wishing to learn how to do large floral compositions with larger mop brushes.

I'm so glad I purchased this book. I'm slowly reading it and practicing techniques that are making a major difference in my watercolor painting skills right away. Also as a plus, it carries a great step by step video. I reccomend this book to anyone that paints in watercolors regardless of how long you have been doing it, wether you're an amateur or a professional, this book won't disappoint you. It is especially useful if you want to learn the key to proper smooth watercolor blending. I promise you will see results right away! I studied art in college and my watercolors professor never wanted to share his secrets for his smooth graded washes and his color blending, but thank God for this lady I'm now saving blood, sweat and tears, not to mention paper, paint and work itself. Buy it, it's an investment!

This is the best book! I dont know this author but she shows real talent for communication to all types of learners. Even without seeing the dvd yet, I can tell that is is so much more organized and visually clearer ....Not too wordy...to the point with each word being useful and descriptive. And the dvd will be the other element to learning how its done....cant wait to watch it. The author took the info from the earlier book she wrote and made it even more organized about teaching everything. I bought both...and like this one best ...although the other one has more to learn from...I havent gotten into it yet enough to know....but Well done.

A perfect book & DVD for a beginner or for the artist that has been putting off trying watercolor again. The detailed information Birgit O'Connor's book & DVD covers is exceptional. After reading and trying the exercises I felt more confident that watercolor isn't as unforgiving as it's portrayed to be. The book was full of great tips to help make ones painting experience successful. This will be another one of those books & DVD's I use for reference.

I bought this book and DVD for a friend and myself. I always say you can learn something from anything you read or watch.I learned a lot about using more water with my watercolors and how to layer things a little easier. The DVD was too short for me, so I guess it was good enough to leave me wanting more.

Very useful information for painting large format watercolour flowers but unfortunately there were two pages missing on the kindle version!

I think it doesn’t’t adda nothing of substanctial, relating to her former book.

Terrific book from a great artist. A wonderful add to my learning library.
