    Excellent for prospective STEM majors

If you're a STEM major, you'll be hard-pressed to find a more clear and concise intro to calculus.  This is THE book to read if math makes you apprehensive -- if you read it carefully and thoroughly it's very difficult to get lost, even if you "suck" at math.  The examples have full explanations and are relevant to the problem sets.  There's adequate build-up without cumbersome formalism for the bigger ideas.  An all-round great book for beginners.With that said, if you're looking for something more rigorous and thorough, I would suggest Spivak (which is a great second-read, imo.).In an upper division class one of my professors (somewhat) jokingly said we're spoiled because we learned calculus with Briggs, I couldn't agree more.
