A Beginner's Book of Prayer: An Introduction to Traditional Catholic Prayers

Dear Reader, I have given this book a five star rating because having purchased it and reviewed it, I found it worthy of such a rating. This is what it is, a prayer book for beginners. When I say beginners I don't mean that it is only for those who have never prayed. There are all different kinds of prayer. I the Catholic Church we have not only a tradition of spontaneous prayers from the heart, but written prayers that should be known to all Catholics. Some have argued that they didn't like the Scripture translations used in the book; it was not my favorite but it was not a false translation either. Another objected to this book as being promoted as "traditional", when for example the inclusion of the Mysteries of Light are shown in how to pray the rosary. These were added to the rosary by St. PP John Paul II. Since he was the Pope, he had the Authority by Christ to add to the Traditions of the Church; the Rosary while being Marian prayer which asks the intercessions of the Mother Of God, is truly a Gospel Meditation, and the St. John Paul II's supplied even more mysteries regarding the life of Christ for one to meditate upon. So impressed was I with this simple yet profound prayer book that I purchased three; one each for my two sons, and one for a best friend who was poorly Catechized in the Faith.

I love that these have the large letters which makes it so much easier to read. The leather quality is excellent and has an overall great feel to it. Price is very just, and if I could I'd purchase another solely to get a different color. It is beautiful and perfect.

A great little book to grasp the prayers that carry the spirit of Catholicism.

This is a lovely book. However, if you are new to the faith and tight on funds see what books are offered for free to 3 or 5 dollars at your local parish. There are similar books at ours for free. If all you need is a rundown of basic prayers.. for a lovely mantel worthy book this is great and pretty comprehensive.

Easy to read. Nice size for reference.

The book is a great starter for people new to the Catholic faith. That said, the driver just threw the book onto the porch from the driveway. My package was half on and half off of the porch the only thing that kept it from the ground was that a bush caught it.

I am new to Catholicism and I know there is over 2000 years of prayer traditions in the church, which is daunting. I saw this little red book to see if it could help. WOW. I have used it every day since I got it. It has helped me better understand the Rosary, and has given me a resource for learning the common prayers of the church. I love the two pages of short prayers at the end, which I have used when fighting down anxiety, fear, or anger. If you know someone who is starting on the Catholic path, I would strongly recommend this as a gift to support them.

Prayers are inspiring

The book is great for learners to praying properly.

This is a recent arrival 2025 if I'm not mistaken. It's a very good compilation of prayers with explanations about what they mean and how to interpret them. The typeface is Arial or equivalent and easy to read. The book is packed with information and plenty to learn. Looking through it, it's instructional and explains things. It's not specifically just a compilation of prayers and nothing more. Now the book is just a standard paperback, but it is inexpensive. The dollar store near my location has peel and stick lamination for $1.25 per roll. For less than 25 cents of material I laminated my copy and it will last for years. I think this is a great buy and I have not seen a prayer book quite like it. Thanks to the author - and the price is very reasonable. The price to content ratio is an excellent value. If you're daring enough to laminate covers you don't need to worry about imitation leather, faux leather and the rest at great cost. This is a very unique book and there is a tremendous amount to learn from it. Rather than just being a compilation it's a tutorial and explanation. I'd say it's a must-have especially at the price point. I have a lot of prayer books, and I've placed this one as top priority. Glad to see that the author is busy keeping the faith! Seriously. Most prayer books are just lists of prayers. I have a copy of Christian Prayer used by the clergy. All good, but this book explains prayer and doesn't just offer a compendium. Be sure to get a copy. Just laminate it and then you're really set. I would have to say that it is unique among prayer books set apart from the rest. This one is not to be missed and one can't complain about price.

This little book is perfect for anyone who would like a cute little prayer book to carry around. It is small and light, paper is normal paper not Bible style paper. No book marks and nothing fancy. Prayers are nicely organized.
