Yes to both (I bought to use with an M500), however, this unit is designed to be plugged into a 2.5" external drive enclosure. I use one from StarTech. The M500 plugs into this board. You then insert the board into the external drive enclosure as you would with a SATA drive. Then plug into your computer using USB. It will be recognized as a drive and you can format, clone, whatever. **Q: Does it slow the transfer?** A: In theory it shouldn't as long as your SATA connection on the motherboard (or controller card) can handle the rates your drive supports. If your mSATA drive is rated for reads or writes of 350+ MB/s, then you should plug it into a SATA 3 header. If it's rated for anything below 300MB/s, then SATA 2 should be fine. In most cases you may not notice a difference anyway. The biggest benefit of solid state drives for most people isn't usually sequential transfer speed, but access times and random read/write speeds. A lower SATA connection won't really affect either of those.In summary: If you do a lot of large file transfers, then you may notice a difference if you use a SATA port rated for slower transfer speeds than your drive is capable of, but for almost all other usage there should be little to no difference.Disclaimer: I've not performed a bench suite or torture test with this device, so I can't give hard data on performance degradation versus a native mSATA connector.
