This funny-looking thing is a PRICELESS tool for helping people who need it, get in and out of a vehicle with an "extra hand." I read through reviews for multiple manufacturer's offerings on these "Gitter Uppers" and settled on this one after seeing multiple references to its better quality. I'm glad I did--I'm very pleased with the heft, strength, quality, & design of this handy device. I need it for my husband, who's having a bit of a challenge fitting his 6'3" frame into a tiny Fiat 500--he says he doesn't know why I didn't get a SMALLER car : ) This handle helps a LOT--you basically just slip the metal part into the door frame's metal hook (look at your car--you'll see it). The design of the metal on this one lets it fit securely in place without slipping backwards, thanks to the scalloped edging near the handle. We've found that hubby can position it either pointing FORWARD or off to the side (pointing OUTWARD). Either way works great and gives him a little something to push against when climbing out of my Clown Car. He stores it beside the seat for easy access & can easily slip it in place once the door's open. The biggest design advantage of this particular model seems to be its heavy design--the metal support inside the handle seems to run the full length of the device. When I read through other reviews, some reviewers complained that a competing (cheaper) model had a very short metal body with a plastic handle--when much pressure was put on those models, the handles broke, rendering them useless. It doesn't look or feel like that will EVER happen with this one--it's sturdy and strong & the outer covering is a comfortable, slightly soft rubberized material--it's impressed me with its function & high quality. I trust it will serve its purpose for years to come. Most highly recommended! P.S. This also has a built-in seat belt cutter (look at the photo--it's the slit where the white teardrop is) & the metal's strong enough to use as a glass breaker, if you ever need it. A+ in my book!

I bought this for my mother-in-law who has some joint issues which makes it even harder to get in and out of sedans (lower cars). She was not very excited to get a "helper" gift, but she appreciated how helpful it really was. The handle is a little heavy and large for easy carrying around. (she doesn't carry a large purse) We decided the easiest thing would be to leave the handle in the car because she needs it mostly to get out of the car, not into the car. She is leaving it in her center console cubby so she has easy access to it when she exists the car and then drops it into the seat before she walks away. When she returns, she picks up the handle before she slides into the seat and puts it away in the console. It is sturdy and easy to use and provides that extra needed hand to climb out. This is a great product and I'm glad I took a chance to try it out. When she slides it into bar on the side of the vehicle, it provides a very sturdy and non moving grab bar for support. It doesn't wiggle around or feel like it could slip or break. It is easy to insert and remove. Great product. I don't know how much the "safety" features will be used. They seem fine but it isn't what we bought it for.

Got this for my 92 year old Dad as he needs a “handle” on both of his sides to get in and out of the car from a wheel chair. This gives him the door and another handle to lean on. Perfect height and when the pressure is put on it, it is strong. May wiggle side to side a bit but is very stable when in use. I too have had my physically challenges having been in a wheelchair 3 times for almost a year total. I can say that this works wonderfully, as long as fits your car. You just have to just check it out. I keep it in the door pocket so can just grab and set in when needed. It fits our Ford Windstar, Ford Escape and Saturn VUE. Too bad that there are reviews that say this is no good because it does not fit their car. That does not make it a great item. One above question asks if ADA approved. As a retired Interior Design, whose specialty is ADA, I cannot say that anything other than building codes really has any kind of ADA approval. ADA is for physical building accessibility. But for physical use for limited mobility it is great. I highly recommend this and it also has the lifesaving devises in it to puncture an air bag, cut a seat belt and break glass in case of can accident. Totally useful.

This is a really helpful gadget, it's well made and it doesn't move in the door bracket, excellent, worth the couple of extra dollars.

This was suggested to my parents by an Occupational Therapist, as my mum found it difficult to get out of my dad's car. It's well made and very sturdy and couldn't be more simple to use. The metal end just sits in the u-shaped metal ring in the card body, near the back of your seat, with the handle pointing outwards. You can then use the handle to support your weight as you get out of the car. My mum's found it a big help. There is also a small blade, tucked safely away in the handle to cut through seat belts in case of emergency and the metal end can be used to smash windows for the same reason. A very good product.
