when empty, is this bag stiff and does it retain it's shape, or more soft and slouchy?

It won't actually stand up on its own, but it won't flop on the floor in a pile if that helps. I normally lean mine against my desk during the day and I can easily pull file folders in and out if I need them.

Would this work for school? I have a roughly 15 in laptop and i need to bring that w/ a binder, books, etc.

I can get everything I need but the kitchen sink in mine. Because I do some traveling doing Genealogy I carry a lot of different items with me. 15” lap top 12” CD player for movies External CD reader for my Lap top Five or six movies and empty disks Camera (Nikon) Pens and pencils Batteries Paper tablets usually two legal, four smaller ones Address book All the cords that go with everything I do not know what kind of book you need to carry; all I know is that I still had more room to put things. I love it and it works for what I need. I will say it was heavy but not so mush that I could not still carry it.

Would a 16" Macbook 2019 fit in the laptop sleeve?

I don't think so, I would not go any more than 15" and I think that would be tight.

Modern canvas is usually made of cotton or linen, sometimes polyvinyl chloride (PVC), although historically it was made from hemp. I do not remember seeing anything stating what the canvas was made of I am leaning towards linen. What ever it is it works very well for me and I am very glad I found this. I am sorry if this did not answer your question.
