A great starter knife set for chopping soft fruits, veggies or other easily cut foods.
My three year old (yes, I know these say age 5 and up) loves to cook and help me in the kitchen. I've been letting him practice with plastic knives spreading jelly and cutting bananas or his sandwich in half. I wanted him to have a more realistic knife to help foster his love of cooking and helping and I found the Curious Chef line. I must say, I'm pretty in love with just about everything this company sells. What a great way to help kids get excited not just about food prep, but also in eating what they've helped with. Now, out of the three knives, my son will only use the smallest at this time, and under VERY CLOSE SUPERVISION. Though the knife is "kid friendly," (and again, I know my son is younger than the recommended age) it is serrated and it is a knife. I understand the possibility that he could cut himself. But, the knife cuts easily on the bananas he has for lunch or breakfast (wow, does a banana he cut himself taste so much better!) as well as easily cuts tortillas for quesadillas, or his sandwich. A friends bought a different brand and has complained that the knife really only presses down on the food and squashes it. This knife definitely cuts. Currently he will only be cutting very soft fruits and only when I am right next to him to supervise every move, but he is having a blast and I love watching him feed his curiosity and love for cooking. And as he gets older and gains confidence and skill, he will be able to chop more and help me more and more in the kitchen. Now, if the sizes of the knives were different, like a pairing knife as the smallest, then I would be over the moon yelling from the roof tops about this set. Ha!

Excellent Knives for Small Beginners
Ordered these for our nervous 8-year-old aspiring chef. She loves to cook, but gets scared about the idea of cutting her finger with a knife. These nylon knives offer a serrated edge that is sharp enough to be useful, though not sharp enough that it will cause an injury if you nick yourself with the blade. I literally took the largest knife and sawed my hand with it to show my daughter that it was safe to use. Since then, she has successfully cut onions, leeks, cooked chicken breast, celery, potatoes, broccoli, and cauliflower with this set of knives. She's also peeled apples with them. Technically I'd give them 4.5 stars since cutting through softer vegetables can be a bit of a struggle. We made a ratatouille together one night and trying to use the nylon knives to cut through the eggplant was virtually impossible. You're stuck with a mushy mess. Really hard and round items, like Brussels sprouts, are also fairly difficult for her. The shape also makes it useful for showing and practicing proper prep techniques. We just wash them in the top rack of the dishwasher after dinner and they're ready the next day to be used again. So on the whole, I consider this a good investment. The knives are lightweight, durable, and strong enough to be helpful in the kitchen.

Good intermediate knife for kids
My kids (5&7) are really enjoying using these in the kitchen. A good, safe knife for practice chopping. It works much better for solid items, like carrots, or cucumbers than the lettuce knife or a good old butter knife (best for little ones to use on soft foods). These are serrated but not very sharp so kids need to push down with some force/use a sawing motion at times. I feel at ease letting my kids chop away with this without watching them like a hawk every second & they are learning the motions of safe knife handling. I’d say this is perfect intermediate knife to use before trying with the real deal for older children.

Great for preschoolers!
We got this set after seeing our friends' 3-year old daughter using them. My son is three years old and last year we got him a Pampered Chef kid's knife, which is a great introductory knife, but it literally can be used to cut bananas... or something of similar consistency. It also would cut with either side, so we had a hard time teaching him proper knife skills. He wanted to help us with prepping the salads - the cucumbers, peppers, etc., so I needed something better. This works pretty darn well. It's sharp enough that it can cut through a cucumber, and if used incorrectly could hurt, but is also blunt enough that it would probably not break skin. The non-sharp side is blunt enough no kid could ever mistake it for the knife side. I like that it has 3 sizes - my son can pick and choose which one he wants. He loves helping, and this is a great way to include him in the cooking process.

So glad I got these for my toddler!
These knives came today and I washed them as soon as we opened them so my 2.5 year old could use them to help prep dinner! We went over knife safety, I showed her how to use it and then it took her three green beans to figure it out to be efficient. She refused to let me put my hand on hers to show the technique, so she really did figure it out with no problem and merely watching me with my "big girl" knife. They do require a sawing motion, which is fine with me and the toddler! She kept herself busy without incident for a good 10 minutes, cutting green beans over and over. We only used the smallest knife, as he is a little kid, but all three knives seem to be of similar, high quality. Per the packaging: Conforms to ASTM F963 and SPSIA lead and phthalate limits, made in China. Says it is age appropriate for children 4+. Dishwasher safe. BPA free (third-party tested).

Great for toddlers!
We purchased this set over two years for our son who was about 18 months at that time. They are sharp enough to cut some things, but not hurt a child if they slip or get a finger underneath. Because they aren't sharp, a lot of pressure has to be used to cut something like a carrot, but now that he's 3 he's able to use them with ease. When he was younger he was cutting things like bananas and cooked items that were soft. It's helped teach him knife skills as well as safety, and along with his learning tower, he now helps prep many meals and cut veggies/mushrooms.
