I'm not a fan of do-it-yourself brain surgery, patent drafting or estate planning. I hesitated to buy Estate Planning Basics because some Nolo books encourage too much self help. Clifford's book does not, rather it facilitates knowing when it is appropriate to hire an expert and for what.Estate Planning Basics is well written and well organized. Segregated topics help readers decide which parts to skim or ignore. If you have no children or they are grown, you don't need to worry about guardians. The downside is redundancy, e.g., repeated references to the federal tax exemption. That is tolerable, however, when it enables one to focus on topics of personal interest and ignore others that are irrelevant.

This is what the "for Dummies" books should have been: a short, organized, and effective introduction to wills, estates, trusts, etc. The author appears to update it frequently which is critical given changing laws.It is not deep and comprehensive but that is not its purpose. _Estate Planning Basics_ helped me to wade into those other sources that provide the detail.
