Intel Thermal Solution Air

I don't have air conditioning in the summer, and I don't like the idea of water cooling, so I was concerned that I may be building a noisy air-cooled monster. I was resigned to live with a bit of noise, since I had another dead silent system which would be powered up most of the time.I figured that I would order the Intel stock air cooled thermal solution, BXRTSLGA2011AC, until I could find something better suited to my needs. Yes, I was aware that almost everyone criticises the stock Intel HSF. But for $19.99, I wasn't gonna keep about a grand worth of parts laying on the table waiting for assembly.When I got the Intel HSF, initial inspection left me with the feeling that this would be a VERY TEMPORARY stop gap solution.The Heatsink was of modest size, and the fan blew down upon it, Which I liked, but it was almost entirely constructed of aluminum. Only a thin sliver of copper was used on the bottom to make contact with the processor's heat spreader.What was even more shocking, and disappointing was that the heatsink's contact area was round, and only covered approximately 60 percent of the processor's heat spreader!I THOUGHT NO WAY WAS THIS THING GONNA DISSIPATE 130 WATTS OF GENERATED HEAT!The heatsink came with a thin layer of thermal paste pre-applied. With thirty years of dealing with computers, one realizes that manufacturers prepare their products for distribution assuming the worst situations in the field. They are much more concerned that something will at least work out of the box, rather than work well. Thus one finds heatsinks with too much thermal paste. This will assure the vendor that at least "some" sort of contact will be made, but not necessarily the best contact.I removed about 80 percent of the thermal compound that was pre-applied. I spread the remaining 20 percent into the thinest layer posssible on the heatsink contact area.Mounting the HSF went fairly well. I prefer the new spring loaded screws to the older push-pins and fancy latch contraptions. The screws had to be pushed down quite a way before they would catch. Attention also had to be paid to the order of tightening the screws.Intial power-up gave me one of the most pleasant surprises I have had in a long time. The system was very quiet, almost silent. In fact, so quiet that if I wanted to tune for noise, I could probably make it silent.The temps were so low that I figured maybe I wasn't pushing it hard enough.The Heatsink was to cool an Intel XEON E5-1620, very similar to i7-3820So I ran 8 threads of Prime95 @ 3.6GHzWith an open case, and room temps of about 72F, the CPU never rose above 122F and the fan hovered around 1900 RPM!Bottom Line: If one knows how to apply it correctly, this Heatsink will cool a 130 watt TDP processor, running 8 threads, full tilt, very quietly. (Not quite silent at 1900 RPM but still very quiet). Also, this is half the weight and size of full tower Heat sinks which can cause your board to flex and short out.

This fan/heatsink worked very well on my standard clocked 4820 CPU. I replaced it though when, during the summer, the ambient temp in the house began to rise to 26c and cpu temps began to rise to the 64c mark. One afternoon at 27c in the house, I ran prime95 as a test and shut the test down when the cpu hit 68c. I cleaned some dust off the fan blades, and the heat sink, and re-ran the test with the same result. The fan seems to have worked great for about 9 months. I didn't re-apply the thermal paste, or reseat the heat sink, I bought a new liquid cooler.

This cooler worked just fine for a LGA2011 processor. Like other reviews the chip is bigger than the contact on the cooler. The plastic piece that protects the thermal compound came loose in shipping and some of the compound smeared which I believe is bad packaging on Intel's part. Despite the very un-cool aspect (sorry for the pun) of putting a "stock" cooler on a $1K processor, this cooler is very capable and quiet. I put this on an i7-4860X (130 Watt), and with "BurnIn Test" running all cores at 100% for 10 minutes, no core got over 71C, with the average in the upper 60's. The fan never sounded like it was working hard. I'll be using it in other builds.

well i have this cooler i insttaled on my rampage extreme x79 along with intel 3930Kon stock the idle temp it was 43c and cpu was at 1200mhz i just run a stress test using prime65 and the temp reach the 80+c in just few secondalso the design of this cooler is so odd for me as it has only small cooper on the middle to be touching the center of the CPU which i think this the reason of the hight heat from my opinion . i was only espect to keep the cpu on avarage temp as its on stock only so no idea for what they make such silly solution

Sometimes simplicity is the best solution. After experimenting with a fancy and expensive water cooling solution that ultimately failed. I got this as a temporary solution. Hah! It works better than the water cooler ever did. Way, way better. I never expected comparatively small fan and heat sink to keep an i7-3930k cool. After all the water cooler struggled to keep it below 80c. Hah! My core temps never get above 60c now.Simplicity wins the day

Gives excellent cooling, with much easy installation.One note though about poor documentation, the supplied manual says it needs a backplate to be fixed on the motherboard prior to installation, while actually it doesn't need any plate.

I've heard talk around the internet about the stock intel cooler being sub par; now I can understand this could be an issue if you didn't adjust the fan speeds, although I don't much care about case noise so I cranked the fan to 100% and it keeps my temps around 32c at idle and it only reaches 43c under load clocked at 4ghz, I'm impressed.

Suite à une procédure SAV sur mon dissipateur habituel, j’ai cherché un dissipateur de secours pas cher. Ce dissipateur officiel Intel est une solution correcte. Le montage sur un socket LGA2011 est un jeu d’enfant. 4 vis et c’est fini, il n’y a pas de plaque arrière à changer. Au niveau des performances, Intel nous fournis le strict minimum. Ce dissipateur a bien du mal à maintenir mon i7 3930K (fréquence et Vcore d'origine) sous les 75°C avec une charge de travail moyenne. Au niveau du bruit, à pleine vitesse il est tout sauf silencieux.Bref, c’est un dissipateur bas de gamme et il ne faut pas en attendre autre chose. Vu son prix (23€ lors de mon achat) en solution temporaire il a parfaitement fait l’affaire. En revanche pour celui qui veut un dissipateur pour tous les jours, il faut mieux y mettre quelques euros de plus et avoir un modèle plus performant.

I've purchased a number of coolers for socket 2011 CPUs and this is the best. I have tried Cooler Master Hyper T4 CPU Cooler B009XGZZPC which was too big for the 4U server case and the Noctua NH-D14 SE 2011 B00631QFG8 which was fouling some of the heat sinks on the memory sticks.Basically the Intel cooler fits in the space intended for the CPU, is reasonably quiet and I've never had any stability issues due to heat. I've run them both in desktop and servers.

The last time I built a computer was eight years ago and at that time the heatsink came with the chip. So I was rather surprised when the CPU I ordered came without a heatsink. I didn't think to check - I just assumed it was included. That held me up for a few days.Anyhow, this heatsink does the job very efficiently. Others have remarked that the area of the heatsink in contact with the CPU is not very big but, even so, it does the job perfectly well.
