The Rocketeer: 20th Anniversary Edition

THE ROCKETEER is an excellent movie that offers something to just about anyone---action, espionage, comedy, romance, aviation and history. The main cast of Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, Paul Sorvino and Timothy Dalton give outstanding performances (Trivia: Timothy Dalton, is best known for starring in two James Bond movies--in THE ROCKETEER, Dalton plays a top Hollywood actor who is really a Nazi spy---in real life, during World War II, Dalton's father was a member of the top secret SOE (Special Operations Executive) which gathered intelligence and trained resistance movements against the Nazis. After the war, SOE was absorbed by MI6---James Bond's spy agency). THE ROCKETEER is even mentioned in THE NAKED GUN 33 1/3: THE FINAL INSULT. My only complaint is the bluray has no special features, but otherwise THE ROCKETEER is highly recommended.

Excellent fun movie

Based on the graphic novel The Rocketeer by Dave Stevens, Disney produced The Rocketeer for a 1991 release to little fan fare and a box office flop. Most critics liked it though—including the famous Chicago newspaper movie reviewers Siskel and Ebert who gave it ‘Two Thumbs Up!’ (see DVD box cover)—finding it easy to ignore the obvious (realism) flaw in the flame spewing jetpack: wouldn’t it burn the back of the users legs? (My) Another complaint is the Germans wanting this jetpack so badly. Why? Would they really believe invading a country with a hundred of these pilots flying a jetpack with no cover would be the key to an army’s invasion success…? Dropping hand grenades? Carrying a machine gun? The pack is fast but…(the Nazi propaganda animation sequence is great by the way) anyways, Disney turned this into a fun adventure film with a PG rating. The final result is a movie that is just as fun for the adults as it is for the kids. The avid film fans will enjoy the Hollywood references—right down to the reason The Hollywood sign no longer reads Hollywoodland. The Rocketeer, also, has a solid cast. The always dependable and sometimes very comical Alan Arkin is the air plane (and then some) mechanic. Paul Sorvino is the intelligent (of course) head of the mob. Ed Lauter is the hard nosed 1930’s FBI agent. Terry O’Quinn is an inspired casting as inventor—and not yet ‘phobic’—Howard Hughes. As most know and/or have pointed out, Timothy Dalton comes as close as can be to stealing the (already entertaining ) show with his portrayal of the Hollywood swashbuckling legend based on Errol Flynn. Jennifer Connelly is stunning in her white dinner dress; and becomes a helpful cog against the evil Nazi plan, not just a damsel in distress. The unknown Bill Campbell was cast—as the story goes—quite intentionally; with names Kevin Costner and Johnny Depp passed over with little regret for the lead by Director Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park 3). Action and ‘flying’ special fx hold up very well for a movie now 31 years old (2023). The Rocketeer is a splashy and occasional camp cheese mix (it’s the 1930’s) of speculative fact and even more 1930’s styled, ‘serial cliffhanger’ fiction. 4.6 stars Widescreen The Rocketeer flies by at 108 minutes in glorious color. Why did The Rocketeer bomb at the box office is a good question. Like B movie critic Joe Bob Briggs used to say: ‘Check it out.’ The Rocketeer coming to your DVD player, soon😁😉

Other than an unknown reason for a delay in its arrival, it arrived just in time. The delay was only a day, but a day could have been too late. Thankfully, it was timely. The package was delivered without flaw or damage. The quality of the movie was superb.

Ein toller und spannender Film im Stil von Iron Man meets Indiana Jones und Art Deco. Die Bildqualität ist schwer zu bewerten, der Film ist bewusst im Old School Look gehalten, Farben sind eher im braunen Farbton (Sepia) gehalten, das Remaster ist scharf, die Details von Close Ups sind wirklich sehr gut (Jackennähte sind zu erkennen oder die Zähne des Reißverschlusses bei einer Jacke zB), Grain wurde nicht weggefiltert, ist sehr fein und es gibt auch keine Doppelkonturen, Flecken oder Kratzer gibt es auch keine. Da hat Disney wirklich gute Arbeit geleistet, besser wird der Film nie aussehen und soll er meiner Meinung auch nicht, da der Old School Look erhalten bleiben soll. Der englische Ton ist perfekt, aber auch der deutsche ist gut, ich habe am Receiver Dolby Pro Logic II eingeschaltet, der 5.1 Upmix klingt ganz gut, die Stimmen sind klar und die Musik ertönt räumlicher, auch der Ton ist gut geworden. Als Extras gibt es leider nur den Trailer. Fazit: Ich liebe den Film und für Fans von alten Filmen aus den 30ern, Abenteuerfilmen, Indiana Jones oder Iron Man, ein Muss, ein Fest für Cineasten! Die Musik und das Feeling erinnert mich an "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" und er bringt bei mir ein warmes angenehmes Gefühl rüber, wie "Jurassic Park" zB, gehört für mich zu den Filmen, bei denen ich mich wieder an meine Kindheit erinnere.
