We have some very large beach towels and the rack holds up to the weight. I would not recommend using this rack without sand in the base. This is my only complaint with this rack. The instructions say you can use water but in my area, it would freeze in the winter and that would likely cause the base to crack so I choose sand. IT works well but you had better have lots of patience to add sand since the whole is very small to get the sand into the base. Once it is in the rack is great.
