If nothing is connected at start up, the device cannot do that and it depends on what was historically there. You might try connecting to the MAC and cycling the MAC's power for it to re-learn about the display. I am not a MAC user so I do not know how to manually tell the MAC what resolution to use. On a PC you right click on a blank area of the screen and select Display Settings. You may have to try different settings to get one both the PC and MAC can tolerate.
