I bought the hooks which then committed me to making a ladder to which I could attach the hooks!These hooks are sturdy and securely latch the ladder to the top rail of the bunk bed. Of course, the ladder sits on the floor so the hooks are there merely to ensure the ladder doesn't pull away from the bed when in use.I made my ladder from 3/4" solid red oak, as shown in the pictures. To ensure the ladder is the right distance from the bed and sits flat on the floor I took a measurement from the diagram on my extension ladder. The diagram shows the angle at which the ladder needs to lean. I figured if that's a good angle for a 20-foot extension ladder it will also work with a 5-foot bunk bed ladder. To get this angle, I bevel-cut the bottom at 10Ā°. The treads are glued and fastened into 10Ā° dado cuts in the vertical members using #2 square drive, bronze-colored screws from McFeely's. Likewise, I used the same type of screws to attach the hooks instead of the zinc-plated ones that came with the hooks. For all screws, I drilled pilot holes and waxed the screws before driving.To set the height of the hooks I leaned the finished ladder next to the bed on the carpeted floor, loaded it (had someone stand on it), dry-fit the hook, and marked its location. This way, the hooks were in just the right spot for this bed.The bunk bed set is at least 55 years old and has done great duty for many sleepers in my family.
