It works by direct contact (Open wire, outlet slots and light bulb socket). Pros: It does the job intended and is reasonably priced. Cons: Cables are on the short side and light indicator is hard to see outdoors during the daytime. Either cable (Red or black) can be used on hot or neutral wire. It has a built-in clip attachment to carry, if you prefer. It does not require a battery, which is a plus, but could be a minus if the small light indicator dies (?). Overall, it is a good product that serves its function. Recommend and would buy again.
