Additional information added was underwhelming.
Book is well made. Story is of coarse great. Additional info added to book was underwhelming. Some of the personal notes/letters did not reproduce well and are hard to read. Really not much there that I cared about.

Tarzan of the Apes Review
The book that I ordered 'Tarzan of the Apes; Three complete Novels', even though used, was in excellent shape. I thought the price was very reasonable. I am more than pleased.

Pulp then, ridiculous now.
The only reasons to read this book are historical and sociological. It was written as popular adventure in an era that accepted European imperialism. It is rife with racism, nationalism, sexism, and has little relation to the realities of Africa or its people or wildlife. Burroughs never saw Africa, so much is invented out of whole cloth. As a window into the thinking of early 20th century Brits, as an example of how risque and violent adventure stories could be in that era, and as a check on the authenticity of the many movies which followed, it might be worth reading this book. Otherwise, as a story, as literature, as good writing, or as a portrayal of Africa, it is singularly lacking..The one worthwhile tidbit is that when searching for the most remote backwater of America in which to put his hero to the test once more, Burroughs chose - Northern Wisconsin!
