Finishing coat:Use on exterior softwood and hardwood joinery, A fast drying filler/stopper for small nail holes and cracks. Finishing coat: Use: Exterior and interior softwood and hardwood Can be overcoated with woodstain, paints and colourless finishes Quick drying Good response to sanding Good adhesion to bare wood. Directions The material is spreadable, the surface must be dry, absorbent and dirt/grease-free, primer necessary for the first treatment. After priming, the surface must dry for 4-6 hours before applying the glaze. The varnish should be applied in two thin coats, with the second layer applied after 12-24 hours. The final drying takes 72 hours. Review: Excellent - Ok, might relatively expensive, but works a treat. Used before, gives good colour and excellent protection. Review: Stop looking and just buy this stuff! - Bought around 2007 to treat a new back garden gate made of cheap, unseasoned and untreated softwood. At the time it cost me about £80 for 1L Cetol Filter 7 Plus and 1L HLS plus - so similar price to today (2026). It is very easy to apply because it is quite thin and behaves much more like a water base than anything oil based and sticky. I applied 3 coats to get my desired shade before applying the HLS+ Nearly 20 years later (and with no maintenance) it is still going strong with no cracking or fading. I have no doubt that this product is probably just about the best treatment for wood available. Understand that it is "low build" and so does not give the appearance of a varnish sat on the wood, but more of a stain that soaks into the wood.
