Although, there are several definitions if you look up on the internet, but I will write here the exact mathematical definition for it. Power factor is a measure of the phase angle difference between the voltage and current. Concepts of real and apparant power come into it. Real power is a measure of the power where the voltage and current are in phase. Apparant power is a measure of the power when the voltage and current are not in phase. It's to do with resitive and inductive/capacitive loads. Inductive loads are devices which use magnetic fields in their operation such as electrical motors and even heating elements and electrical irons which contain heating elements implemented as coils of wire. A purely resistive load results in the voltage and current being in phase with each other. It is capacitive and inductive loads the which shift the phase of the current relative to the voltage, either forwards or backwards. The mathematical definition is: P=V.I.Cos(theta) P is the power V is the voltage I is the current. Theta is the phase angle difference between the voltage and current waveforms. The full stop symbols in this equation means "multiply". Cos(theta) is the Power Factor. And the Cosine of any angle is a value between 0 and 1. A value of 1 represents the voltage and current waveforms are in perfectly in phase with each other, where the phase difference is zero degrees, and therefore the cosine(0 degrees) is the value of 1. A power factor not equal to 1, means there is apparant power being consumed. As residential customer you don't need to worry about it. You don't get charged for the apparant power (not yet anyway although that might change in years to come with smart meters). You only get charged for real power. The maths involved and true understanding is university degree level, though they will teach the basics to electricians. Don't worry about it. You can ignore it in a residential setting. **Q: Will it display as low as say 0.2 watt accuratly ?** A: Yes, the Modes 2 cumulative electrical quantity smallest energy value on the display is 0.001Kwh. **Q: Is there a way to zero the data (kWh, Lo watts, hi watts) without resetting the entire unit and then having to re-enter the cost per kWh?** A: Hold Function and Up. No fuss, no problems and I'm happy with it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Easy to use, doing a good job and keenly priced *by S***K on 6 August 2021* I have only had the meter for a week or so. We bought it to replace a much older unit (different model and manufacturer) that had mysteriously become very inaccurate. Everything so far has been quite pleasingly simple. The massive advantage over the old device is that this meter will integrate the power reading over a period of time to give total energy consumed in kWh. The old meter would only give current power consumption. If the equipment under test has fluctuating demand (e.g. anything with a temperature controlled heater or pump), it is very difficult to get a good idea of energy usage without this feature. I have compared the voltage reading against an accurate digital voltmeter and get agreement with 0.5%. I cannot be sure the current range is as accurate, because I could only compare it with a current clamp working at the lower end of its range, but the readings were consistent so I have no reason to doubt the plug-in meter. I do find it strange that nowhere on the unit is there any mention of the manufacturer or model number, although there is a label giving the electrical specifications. The instructions are very brief, as mentioned elsewhere, but then they'll get lost anyway! It is obvious how to operate (except I have not used the cost function. I am perfectly capable of multiplying the kWh buy the charge rate using a calculator). The most important point to remember ( I will probably write it on the unit) is that you can clear the readings and restart the timer by holding don the "FUNCTION" and "UP" buttons for a few seconds. For us it is really useful that we can clear the readings without having to interrupt power to the equipment for which we were measuring the power consumption. I have not had any need to press the "RESET" button yet. The price was very keen and it's doing a really good job for us so far.
