With love & laughs, wit & imagination, Alex & Emma writes the book on romance.]]>

Review: Excellent. - Excellent movie
Review: A charming, little-known classic - If you’re looking for an amusing and adorable afternoon then look no further than this movie. The characters and casting are wonderfully entertaining and the storytelling is a refreshing blend of imagination and quirky comedy. It might start off a little slow compared to a typical blockbuster, but sit tight and wait for the laughs and sighs to hit. They will!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ An entertaining comedy

I first checked out "Alex & Emma" at my local library where I work and really enjoyed it, particularly since the main character, Alex, is a writer like me, so I had to get it. Before I go any further, I should mention that the movie seems to be a remake of the Audrey Hepburn/William Holden comedy "Paris When It Sizzles." I saw both movies around the same time, but, for some reason, didn't catch the similarities between the two until reading a review here, but they are apparent if you watch them back to back. Both movies have the writer dictating their story to a stenographer and both have the main characters playing roles in the story the respective author is writing about. This is not explicitly stated on the back of the case, but there are some interesting connections. In "Alex & Emma," the plot is about Alex (Luke Wilson), a writer who has to write a novel in thirty days, so that he gets paid in order to pay off some loan sharks that he owes money to. The problem is, he has writer's block. He meets Emma (Kate Hudson) who helps him write the novel, becoming a source of inspiration for Alex as they work to get the novel finished on time. As a writer myself, I found the story quite funny in how it depicts the writer's life and how others perceive writers. For instance, Emma doesn't understand how Alex as a writer, doesn't know what his character will do or where his story is headed. "How can you not know?" she asks him, but Alex tells her that the characters tell him where the story should go. This is true and I have learned that it's helpful for me to relinquish control of the story over to my characters and see where they take me. Not everything has to be mapped out. I also found it funny from the perspective of the reader as well. For instance, at one point, Emma gets frustrated with Alex's characters, saying, "You mention a character named John Shaw and I picture in my mind thin, with a stylish mustache, and then when you finally get around to describing him he's this fat old fart with a hole in his teeth." So true. I hate it when authors don't describe their characters when they're introduced at the beginning as I need some sort of picture as to who they are. Then when they describe them several chapters later, it's ruined for me, because I've already made up in my mind what they should look like. This was spot on. Also, there's a point where Alex gets stuck and says he has to get out of the house to go clear his mind. When Emma protests, claiming they should be working, he says, "this is work." So true. As a writer, I have to get away from my desk, go outside and take a jog or a walk in order to re - charge my mind, then when I get back, my mind is clear so I can focus on writing. I remember laughing out loud when I first saw this because I could relate to it. Sometimes writers just need a break. The story shifts back in time from the 1930s, where Alex's story takes place, and the present. I really enjoyed this movie and could relate to the characters, especially Alex. It's one of those movies that I really have to be in the mood for, like when I need inspiration to write or if I just need a laugh. Hudson and Wilson have great chemistry and I really enjoyed watching these two bounce off each other as the movie progressed. The movie also features Sophie Marceau ("Braveheart") and a cameo appearance by the director, Rob Reiner. The picture looks great. I liked the story and the characters of Alex and Emma are fun and relatable. The only special features are an audio commentary with Rob Reiner and Luke Wilson and a trailer. If you're a writer or like books and are looking for a fun romantic comedy, then check out "Alex & Emma."
