Trike Conversion Rear tire on Front
Replaced a MichCommander3 130/80 17 on a 2017 Ultra Classic converted to Motor Trike. Did the research and found most of the GW owners use the BT 46 (was 45) rear on the Front, reversing the direction of rotation. Didn't see many Tri-Glide users with this and found the stock TriGlides have 16" front and 15" rear (Milwaukee M8 years)... My Motor Trike has 17" Front and 17" Rear (custom) 245/45 17 (low profile). This set up may have contributed my problem. The dealer mounted this in the reverse direction as many others do ( maybe "most" others with trikes). On the first ride, the front end seemed to have a 'new' shimmy at higher speeds (50 - 65mph). Next few rides I encountered mild to scary Speed Wabble (left/right alternating fork compression) at 50 or 60 when there was light down force (accel) and ripples in the road. A little brake or left-right steer would stop it. Some more research found others with similar, but at lower speeds. A few commenting lower tire pressure helps (lowered mine to 35, then 30 - no change). Others say they always mount in normal rotation to prevent 'vibration' on their customer's bikes/trikes. Had my rotation switched back to normal and the wabble is gone. Road solo and 2 up for a few 100+ mile trips, various conditions. Still good. Settled on 35 psi as these side walls are thick and stiff ( a rear), which 'seemed' to feel a little better in the tight turns. The zig zag tread pattern in the tire's center doesn't seem to be "directional" (for water). Trikes don't lean so don't see a handling issue in the rain. Hope this helps if you have a similar set up. I'm happy with the tire, thick, deep, centered tread.
