I noticed many users have complained about receiving an adulterated product, and frankly I thought I had received one as well. I called Seachem and got the scoop. Here's what I found out: Matrix is a natural, mined product. The mineral has natural variations in size and color. When mined, black Obsidian is sometimes included in the take. The Obsidian is removed by hand before packaging, but some slips into the container from time to time. The packaging does not have a tamper-proof seal beneath the lid. When you open the jar, you immediately see the product. Matrix is sold by volume and not by weight. A minimum weight is listed in the literature (e.g.: 1 liter of Matrix = 400 gram net weight) but this is required by law, and has nothing to do with the actual weight of the product, which can vary greatly due to Matrix absorbing moisture from the air, for example. The data sheet gives a Chemical Abstracts Service number (CAS#) for it, and that is 1332-09-8. Google that number. **Q: do you need to keep this in a bag or in the tray in my cascade canister filter?** A: It can be placed in your tray. it is loose. Might want to make sure you use a tray for the canister that has the lid on it. **Q: Does it work the same way as the ceramic bio rings?** A: A million times better. The ceramic rings are trash. This has a lot more surface area because of the small cavaties in each piece. This stuff is fantastic for your bacteria. **Q: I have a Magnum 350 filter which has a canister that has charcoal on the inside and a foam sleeve outside. Do I use this to replace the charcoal?** A: No, charcoal is a chemical filter. Matrix is a biological filter.If you did not need chemical filtering in your system, you could repurpose the Magnum 350 as a bio-filter by replacing the carbon with Matrix.
