Best dye for dark hair!
I love this dye. I've never found another dye that actually colors my fairly dark hair. No, it's not super vibrant - if you have dark hair and want vibrant color, you'll have to bleach. But I just want my natural hair to have a deep purple hue, and this dye does that perfectly. It also lasts FOREVER. I wash my hair 1-2 times a week and this dye lasts three or four months. It probably lasts longer, but I always re-dye it by then because my hair has grown out quite a bit. Also, I've seen reviews say that this dye stains everything. I've not found that to be the case. Arctic Fox, Punky Color, and Manic Panic all leave purple stains all over my shower for weeks or months. This one doesn't. It also doesn't run when I sweat, even newly dyed. I saturate my hair with dye, then put a shower cap over it and heat with a blow dryer for 10-15 minutes. Then I let it sit for about an hour. I rinse with water as cold as I can stand (so usually about room temp) and condition. I don't shampoo for several days. I've used this dye 4 times in 4 different shades (Amethyst, Plum, Tanzanite, and Magenta) and they've all turned out fantastic. Photos are of my natural hair color, and the Plum, Tanzanite, and Magenta dyes. I don't have a photo of the Amethyst, but it looked similar to the Tanzanite, but slightly less blue. My favorite so far has been the Plum.

Great colour when used correctly - 10/10
My hair is naturally pretty dark and I've never found another product that would actually show up on it without bleaching. This has worked every time. I've also tried the Midnight Tanzanite, it showed up, but less, and was closer to a blue than a purple. I tried the red, too, once, but it faded to a shade that wasn't good on my skin so I'm sticking with the Midnight Amethyst. I do it about every 6-8 weeks and I honestly think just putting layer over layer has given it more depth and dimension than I had the first few times. I've used this shade of Splat for a few years now & I get more compliments than I ever got from anything a stylist did so I'm sticking with it. The thing is, you have to do it correctly or you'll end up with all the complaints you see in these reviews. If you have patience, you end up with good colour that will last many washes and won't leave stains everywhere. It's still a depositing colour (not one that actually enters the cuticle of the hair) so no, you don't want to get caught in a rainstorm but it doesn't need to stain your pillowcase either. Def use a junky towel to dry it the first few times but I rarely get anything stained anymore. Here are my recs: 1: Leave it in longer than it says, esp for very dark hair. Based on the instructions, I should leave it up to 45min; I regularly leave it in another 10-15 min. This gives you a little extra "buffer" for when you go to rinse it out so you don't lose as much in the first wash. It's best if someone else applies it, either way stop about 1/4" away from the scalp. It will expand & seep to the roots anyway and it leaves less left on the scalp, which you'll see is better. 2: Cover it with a plastic cap/bag while it processes. The warmth opens the cuticle & lets a tiny bit in which helps it last. Also then it doesn't drip on your face while you're waiting. Get gloves that are close at the wrist, like at the doctor's office. They give you a pair with the kit but they stick out all stiff & make it harder to keep things clean. 3: Plan to spend a LOT of time in the shower to rinse it out and expect it to look like a crime scene in the process. I put my showerhead on the highest pressure with the water as cool as I can stand and put my head back & just rinse & rinse & rinse. I wear gloves in the shower so I can use my fingers to work the product off my scalp, which is where a lot of it will end up. Rinse the shower every few minutes, too, it'll help keep it clean..er. lol 4: Use a low or neutral pH shampoo, and (gloves still on) lather it up, mostly into your scalp - NOT your actual hair (overall general good rule anyway). The hair is where you want the colour to stay & enough shampoo will trickle there to clean it. Most of the "weeks later I'm still getting stains" is from what's left on the scalp, I promise you. I didn't used to wash it as thoroughly or rinse as long and it makes a difference. 5: High pressure, cool water, rinse rinse rinse rinse rinse. If you've been thorough, your water will *almost* be clear now. If not, and if there's still a lot of colour, do another light shampoo and rinse more. The conditioner they give you in the kit is fine. My hair is shorter so it lasts me a few washes but def use *some* sort of light conditioner. 6: BE SURE TO END WITH COOL/COLD WATER - EVERY TIME YOU WASH IT. I despise a cold shower but to keep my hair nice I gut up & use cool. That will help more than you can imagine. Here are 2 shots of my hair with this product, one in full sun and the other inside (IDK what the white outline is about, it's from my stylist). The price here is about what I used to pay at the bullseye store but nobody seems to carry it anymore IRL so here we are. Price is very fair for how much I like it (and considering the hundreds I'd have to pay a good stylist). I love my Splat and will always recommend it to folx who will take the time to do it right.

Beautiful
I love it I have medium brown curly hair and I used the midnight ruby and it turned out exactly how I love not glaringly vibrant but not dark and dull either just a gorgeous vibrant but still deep red color with pink/magenta undertones and no bleach required it truly DOES show up on medium brown hair but be warned it will stain the hell out of everything if you aren’t careful.

NOT Semi Permanent, but does stain everything besides your hair
Terrible. My hair takes dye well, but this stuff acted like temporary wash out type of stuff. I followed the directions, shook the bottle of color, evenly applied, waited the amount of time according to instructions(which seemed like a super long time BTW), then I rinsed. . . . AND I rinsed & rinsed & rinsed & rinsed & rinsed rinsed & rinsed & rinsed & rinsed & rinsed & rinsed until I was running out of warm water but the water was ALMOST running clear finally, so I did the conditioner. Then I rinsed a whole bunch more because that made the water run dark again. The skin on the back of my neck & between my shoulder blades was stained purple, my finger nails & palms were stained purple, as well as the tub. After my hair dried it felt like 10 layers of day old hair spray in most parts of my hair. I just actually washed my hair for the first time since dying it a few days ago. Never have I had a hair dye that is labeled as SEMI PERMANENT all but wash out between the initial rinse & condition & it's first subsequent washing. My finger nails are still purple, & it was a lovely shade, but it is NOT semi permanent, made my hair feel gross & had staying power on just about everything EXCEPT my hair. I do not think I will give this brand another try anytime soon. It's possible it works well for others, but it was an absolute waste of my money & time. If I could have left a 0 star I absolutely would have.

Great bleach-free color on medium-brown hair & lasts forever.
The midnight line is my current favorite dye for my medium-brown hair. No bleach needed & the color really pops. I wash my hair about 1-2 times per week, and this color lasts for months with that schedule. It still fades over time and becomes something like an ombre tint, but that means I can just let it go without worrying about it looking horrible. The color will stain your bathroom though if you aren't diligent! Eventually it comes out, but you definitely want to be careful if dying at home and during the first few hair washes. Overall, very satisfied with the great colors and lack of bleach.

Long lasting color, stain removal tricks, and tips on usage!
Great color!!! I've had purple hair for 10 years now, and I've been using this particular shade for the majority of that time. Other brands like arctic fox just don't last as long as splat. Let me tell you everything I know from my experience with using this color for years!!!! This shade is definitely a more blue tone when you first use it. I have medium brown hair that I lighten to a level 8 or higher blonde. This color looks almost completely dark blue, similar to the character Coraline, when first applied. It slowly fades to a beautiful, rich, deep purple shade over time. Eventually it will even lighten to a magenta shade, and then to pink. Again, this is all on bleached hair, so I can't speak for the fade on unbleached hair. This color typically lasts without touch ups for 6 months to a year for me, but many variables can impact fade time. I can safely say that with my hair care routine, soft water, and general hair type, I can go at least a year without touching up anything but my roots with this dye. I can NOT say the same for any other brand of hair dye that I've tried!!! I typically leave my hair dye in overnight, my hair is naturally almost 3ft long (it is 35in or 89cm to be exact) and very healthy. I have never experienced any changes in hair shedding, growth, or damage while using this dye. It is not any more unsafe for hair than any other dye on the market that I've used, which is a fair amount of hair dye brands. The people who say its damaging and will ruin your hair are only talking about if you are prone to changing your hair color often, as splat is notoriously difficult to bleach out of your hair. I can attest to this, as when I bleach over an already dyed portion of my hair, the purple will change to a green color and my roots will turn a normal brassy blonde color. I can imagine that would be a very annoying thing to color correct. If you have intentions of keeping your hair mostly blonde or plant to keep your next hair color somewhere similar on the color wheel, the I doubt you will have any issues with this dye. Also, if you read the box and instructions, I'm pretty sure it says that it's only made to be used on unbleached hair if it's a medium brown color or lighter. Darker hair colors will usually have less luck getting this color to stick. Hair care also matters a lot with getting a long lasting color. Hard water, sulfates, and frequent washing can strip dye from your hair very quickly. Low porosity hair might not absorb dye as easily when unbleached. Bleaching not only removes color from your hair, but also opens the cuticle and allows more opportunity for hair dye to deposit into your strand. It is important to remove product buildup before you dye your hair as well, since product buildup can also interfere with how the color takes. Also!!! A tip to get stains off of surfaces!!!! Use undiluted castile soap (I like Dr.Bronners unscented baby soap because it's safe to use around pets) and pour it onto whatever surface got stained. Scrub it in, without using any water yet! Then, once you've scrubbed real good, rinse it off with regular tap water. This should remove the majority of dye stains. It got like 99% of the dye off my cabinets, sink, floor, and bathtub. I also used this same method to help get around 75% of the dye off of my skin, but please be careful if you have dry or sensitive skin because undiluted castile soap can be a bit harsh.

Works depends on your hair color and desired effect
Firstly, I want to give detailed information for my experience with this product. Well, I know it will definitely color light color hair blue. I’m African American with natural brown/black hair color. Additionally, I have “loc’ed” my natural hair AND added loc extensions. sometimes with Locs it can take awhile for color to process. Additionally, since I have human hair loc extensions sometimes it may contains artificial fibers which can resist color. I wanted to point this out as the the process I endured. I placed the color on with gloves in sections. I followed the directions specifically until it was time to rinse. I opted to use the shower and honestly I’m glad I did. It took FOREVER for the color to rinse out. The color as some advised in other reviews reported it gets EVERYWHERE. I put a protective barrier on my forehead, hairline, ears, shoulders (I had on a tube top dress due to the length of my hair), ears, etc. It’s easy to remove from skin with 70% alcohol. The rinsing took over 45 minutes. This is why I mentioned my hair in the beginning. Can’t say if it was due to the high pigment of the product or locs. Then I shampooed with sulfate free shampoo and the blue came out again even more. I shampooed for 2.5 washes and it kept pulling color out. I did not use an entire bottle. I used approximately half. I have gray pieces I added to my hair and that color took perfectly. I can say for me, I see darker hair after the application. Not blue, but black. I was hoping for a dark blue/black color (black with blue tones in the sunlight) but I did not get that affect. I used ZEP for my shower and raised areas as I was working and isolated myself to the drain area as I was rinsing. I gave it 3 stars as I have never had something this pigmented stain items so badly, but can stain hair the same.

Great for Long-Term Use
I've been using this product for 6 years now and I love it. Some things to note: -don't use any of the included lightening agents, get better quality products -don't expect it to last on unlightened hair. it fades almost instantly on raw, unprocessed hair -do wear gloves and apply oil to your skin before using the product-this will stain for a few days but it does scrub off -do thoroughly rinse and wash after applying or you'll be sweating color -do enjoy a truely long lasting color treatment with a lovely fade out phase This product is definitely for those of us that maintain our fantasy hair color long-term and not for people who want to try it for a few weeks.
