The Bucket Book: A Junkyard Percussion Manual, Book & Data CD Review: Good book. - This book is geared toward music teachers teaching kids how to play bucket drums. I have been a percussionist for close to 30 yrs and only recently began playing the snare drum. I thought it would be good info and fun for practice. Also thought maybe my grandson would be interested in it. I am using it also to learn more rhythms to apply to snare drum (Remo Bucket head snare) with cajon for the base drum. Review: An Excellent Introduction - I use the concepts and skill-building activities in this method book with my middle school general music students, and we all love it. The author (and his YouTube channel) does a nice job explaining and demo-ing. When you factor in all the application of percussion technique and musical literacy into this method, the results are both totally legit and fun. Highly Recommended! Nice work, and good luck to you, Professor Birrow :-)

It has great pictures, step by step instructions and even sample ...
I purchased this book to help me teach bucket drumming during VBS this year. It is a very well laid out book. It has great pictures, step by step instructions and even sample lesson plans. I played the flute for years in high school, but don't have any experience as a drummer. I felt this book was very user friendly.

All the information I needed.
I teach piano in an elementary school. I started a bucket drumming unit to keep things fresh and interesting for the students. The students were shocked when I told them that I had no idea what I was doing. Although I totally understand all the rhythm and notation concepts that I'd be teaching, I had NO IDEA how to manage a classroom or what the best sequence to teach concepts would be. Heck, I couldn't even think where to begin. This book clearly laid out EXACTLY what I should be doing. After a couple of weeks of experimenting and trying out new techniques, we're already learning grooves and beginning to sound like a percussion ensemble. Great resource!

Terrific Teaching Resource!
I’ve begun a children’s community drum program, and this book is a godsend! My favorite part is the detailed lesson plans, which WORK and really get the kids playing! Pages of ideas for activities, cadence and rhythm examples, and advice for classroom management make this book a joy to teach from.

This is a great book! I have used it with my bucket drumming class and it was a hit. I'm a percussionist and I felt it explained how to set-up and run a bucket drumming group really well. I highly recommend it.

A slender book that exceeded my expectations...
He not only describes the creation of playable musical instruments from humble found objects but also provides beautifully designed lesson plans to use with young students. The author shows his experience with young learners in a classroom situation, but the lessons that he teaches can also be applied to beginning musicians of any age. In a bit of reverse logic, professional educators could study this book to learn how to create useful, flexible lesson plans in subject areas other than music.

David Birrow is "the source" for bucket drumming with kids.
The book and the CD are great -- but I honestly got a lot of what I needed for my purposes from the author's YouTube videos. Still, it is nice to have and makes me feel as though I actually paid for his guidance instead of getting it all for free. The book and his online videos are so easy to follow -- our youth group is having a great time experimenting with bucket drumming! And we are looking forward to at some point adding in some of the other "instruments" described in this manual.

Haven't used it yet but looks great. Sound's not very loud on CD though.

Brought this to help me teach 10 and 11 year olds bucket drumming. There are lots of pages of rhythms which are also on the CD. I just wish there was a complete performance piece. The books says 'figure out a way to stop the groove'. I was hoping the figuring out had been done for me. I can put some sort of performance together from the rhythms but it would have been easier to have several scores complete with intro and outro. I might have to use a Samba whistle to switch to a new groove or djembe techniques. I'm a bit disappointed to be honest. I wanted an arrangement created for me - not be told to 'create an arrangement'.
