Review: Superb trip down under for kids - I saw this movie for the first time right after a trip that I had taken to Australia a few years ago. I wanted to see a film based on that continent, and I’ve always enjoyed making paper airplanes. We recently bought the movie and watched it with my four-year-old niece, and although it was a bit of a stretch for her to get some of the subtleties, she liked the movie quite a bit even as I really enjoyed revisiting it and felt like it held up great on my 2nd viewing. A few things to know in advance: The acting is good, and it’s paced well. It’s important to note that the 12-year-old boy/protagonist and his dad have recently lost the mom in the family. That element of melancholy plays an important role, but the film does a good job of balancing that piece of the story with some inspirational moments at each stage. There’s also some standard competition movie rivalry stuff that occasionally borders on bullying, but again those elements do not go overboard. The parent/child and mentor/student relationships in the movie are well done and fairly realistic. A bit cheesy in places, but it works. Has some great messages about life: the loss of a family member, the journey back to wholeness, and the resulting bond between dad and son; the turning away from aggressive confrontation; the connection between nature and science; self discovery and the power that brings for good; faith in a dream; new friendship. It has the elements to keep both girls and boys interested. An innocuous first boy-girl interest and lots of action/activity. No sexual anything. No bad words. A few names called, but not cussing. There is a villain, of course, but even he comes around in the end. This movie has taken a top place in our list to show our grandchildren when they come for our grand parenting camp.
