Although I found it helpful, there are several guidelines and things that are said to be "don't ever do in your writing" that are untrue. John Grisham, Franklin W. Dixon, Stephen King, John Coyne and others use the "don't do" styles and are very successful. I think what they mean to say, is find your style and stick with it. Saying... "Mark said," instead of "said Mark," isn't going to win or lose a Pulitzer Prize. It was still helpful and for a beginner I would definitely suggest it. But overall, write what you know and, in your voice, and stick with it. I have 4 published novels and have made a modest income from them but I love writing and am going to keep on writing.
