The sensor is at short range and is completely horizontal/frontal, it doesnt sense anything from a diagonal angle at all, so wouldnt work when reaching over to put something in, or emptying a long armed dustpan for e.g. you have to be stood RIGHT infront of it for it to open and there is no manual back up button like some of the other brands. Tested it for a day before sending it back. Given it 4 stars as its a nice bin, just wouldnt work for me personally. If you have a large kitchen where you have to walk over to your bin area anyway, this would be perfect.
