Nick, I had the same problem. I think the solution is in the graphite. On Youtube a guy said he could not get the pump to work with graphite from a pencil. I have used the graphite designed for a lock and it didn't seem to work properly. I could feel it bind when the paddles came to the top. By forcing it it seemed to work better but still the pressure was not consistent. I think the graphite for Boy Scout slot cars is finer and may work better. I just recently picked some up in a hobby store but haven't tried it yet. I think you have to really clean all the parts with either carbureator cleaner or brake cleaner. Available in auto supply stores. These cleaners evaporate quickly and don't leave any residue.
