Review: a great start to a hopefully long career - I've been intrigued by Zayn's voice for a while. I wasn't a big fan of One Direction's music bar a few songs but I always noticed some of his soulful contributions to the whole. So when he quit, I was anticipating hearing what he could do on his own. And he definitely surpassed any expectations I had. The star of this album is, without a doubt, his incredible voice. Versatile, warm tone, utterly arresting on some tracks (like stop you in your tracks arresting) like Blue, or the Target bonus Golden. The production on this album is fantastic, so varied (except for a few songs in the second half that melt into each other - pleasantly but could've been broken up a bit to give some contrast). The overall album is incredibly cohesive as a body of work. While not perfect - some of his lyrics can be repetitive or straight up bizarre but he's making a good start on that end and will surely develop over time - it's a really damn good debut. I don't think there's anyone among his pop peers (the Biebers, Jonas Brothers, Shawn Mendes etc.) who has his pipes, sheer talent and edge enough to be interesting. I almost forgot, that Flower intermission is easily one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard on a pop record. Period. Not this year, or in several years. But ever. I get the sense that this is just the beginning for this guy and I'm excited to see him develop in his artistry, lyricism and vocals. He could be a real force to be reckoned with in a few albums. Review: Sick color! - Absolutely love this new vinyl I ordered. This is one of my favorite albums from Zayn and I love how unique the record color is. There’s tiny little intricate swirls in the neon green and it looks so cool on my record player. The sound is absolutely perfect and this was such a killer album.
