Why is the liquid in the small bag the hooks come in?

I am reading the reviews specifically for this same question. The oily stuff seems to be the same scent as the sticks. I thought it was to refreshen the sticks once the scent dissipates?

How many do I place on tree?

I placed 4 on mine. Was nice scent but not over powering.

Is the stick harmful for irritating to house pets?

This is an interesting question and a bit hard to answer. If you have a cat that likes to climb the tree and pull stuff off and chew on it, it MIGHT be harmful. If you are referring to the scent/odor, it can be strong but it doesn't seem to bother our two dogs or our family members. Don't know if this helps. Merry Christmas.

What oils or whatever are in these? Worried about toxicity in cats.
