Why has the price gone up over the years?

Certain applications can support only this chip.sometimes 80GB hard drive is 4 times expensive than one or two TB hard drive. That is the nature of technology. Best of Luck.

I have a lenovo ideacentre k410 that comes with i3-2120 3.3 ghz sandy bridge dual core. i want to upgrade to a quad, this cpu works in my machine?

They are the same socket so the i7 wouod technically fit, but there are many different options inside the k410 model. The main problem I can guess there might be is the TDP or the power needed by the i7-2600 being about 150% (140W) of the i5-2320 (95W) or your i3-2120 (65W) that were options on the k410's. Your best bet is to contact Lenovo support or register your device and look it up by serial number to make sure of exactly what watt power supply (data or spec sheets) is in your system and whether it can handle the 2600.

Would this take DDR4 even though it says it can supports DDR3?

NO the motherboard that this CPU fits is a DDR3 motherboard for socket LGA 1155
