No, because it is 9" tall, not 7". Cutting off 1" would make it 8".

Is this strong enough to double as a step stool for a 50 lb child?

It is, as an adult, I've put my full weight on it as a step stool and it's still holding strong. However, i would not recommend it as a step stool for its primary function.

Is this real wood? I'm debating between this or the adjustable bamboo one... but that one is $80

it's a composite of bamboo wood -- and very light weight - it's also fairly high but I'm 5'2" and this one is perfect -- and my spouse is 6'2" and it's also great for his height.

The stool itself isn't marked, so I can't help you with where it's manufactured. I CAN TELL YOU IT IS GORGEOUS AND WORKS WELL! It actually looks classy! The only caution I have is that if you have toddlers, they would topple off it they used the SQ as a stool.
