The temperature to kill the bacteria living in feces/poop has to be BOILING literally - 212 degrees (or higher depending on your geographic altitude) Fahrenheit - and some of the bacteria you have to boil 20 minutes before they die. There is no water heater or dishwasher that works at that temp. Just don't do it! **Q: I want a scooper that picks up smaller clumps. Will this one retain those annoying small bits ? Already have a metal one for large clumps.** A: It definitely catches clumps "smaller than a raisin" (one review here suggested otherwise). The grate spacing is 4mm (according to the specs they listed) which is about 1/8th of an inch (teensy bit larger). Take a tape measure out & you'll see how small that is. It's about the perfect size for me–if much smaller, the clumping clay litter I use would quickly clog the scoop, letting no litter through. Any larger and it would let larger clumps of litter through (making it no better than the standard plastic scoop I have). There will still be small clumps that get through (there are scoops on Amazon that have smaller grate holes, but as reviews I read noted, it takes a very long time to get through the litter because they so readily clog). This one is the goldilocks size for me. **Q: Does the metal go all the way into the handle ?** A: There is NO flex in the handle. Solid. **Q: Does this scrape the wet clay off the bottom of the box? My cat likes to dig holes and pee at the bottom of the box and cover it.** A: Yes it does! You can turn it over to really scrape hard to loosen " stuck on the bottom pee"! It scoops litter. Why would it be worth upgrading? Well, one day my cheapie plastic scoop cracked and I found myself in the market for a new one. I came across this, and holy cow, look at those reviews - okay, that's interesting, I guess I'll try it, it's more than I want to spend on a litter scoop, but at least it looks like it won't break too easily, right? After a couple of months of use, I can tell you that the reviews are true, this is a fabulous scoop! I've had cats my whole life and I've been cleaning up litter for most of it, and this is the most thoughtfully designed litter scoop I've ever owned. It is wide, it is strong, it sifts, it digs in corners beautifully, it's got a nice, long, comfortable handle and it is pretty good at keeping the litter from sticking to it. (The company also thoughtfully provides tips on how to keep it even more non-stick.) You can tell that it will never crack under the weight of even the biggest of litter jobs, and it looks a lot nicer than the cheapie plastic shovels, too. The one tiny negative about this scoop is that, since it's made of metal, it's not light. If you only have have a little litter to sift through, it's no big deal. If you have a lot to manage and you're used to the lightweight plastic scoops, then your arm might be in for a bit of a workout by the end. I'm not taking a star away for this because it's the tradeoff for the scoop being so wonderfully solid and durable, but I do wish it were just a teensy bit lighter. (People with grip problems may want to stick to the plastic scoops, unfortunately.) Everything else about this scoop is absolutely superior and I too have joined the ranks of people wishing I'd gotten it a lot sooner.
