I Like It!
I love this hat—the amount of protection from the sun is great. I even wear it in the winter with a head band for extra ear protection. During the summer it is lightweight and comfortable on hot days. It is packable. The neck flap discourages insects. Inexpensive, well-made, washable.

Reliable Sun Protection - Home Prefer Men's Sun Hat
I purchased the Home Prefer Men's UPF 50+ Sun Protection Cap with Wide Brim and Neck Flap for my husband two years ago, and it has proven to be an outstanding investment. This sun hat still holds up perfectly, even after multiple washes in the washing machine to remove saltwater from the beach and chlorine from the pool. What stands out the most is the excellent coverage it provides. The hat shields his face, ears, and neck completely, sparing us the constant worry of sunscreen application. The dark gray color matches the representation in the picture, and the durability of the hat makes it worth every penny. I find myself consistently recommending the Home Prefer Sun Hat to friends for reliable sun protection. It's a must-have for anyone looking to keep themselves shielded from sunburn. Definitely worth the purchase.

>> DOES THE JOB
PROS > Wide brim. Well made, simple design, adjustable crown size, removable adjustable neck strap, air vents in crown. > Non-removable, neck flap keeps the sun and insects (including mosquitos) off your ears and neck. Because the neck flap is non removable, it can't get lost nor can insects crawl around it > Light weight. Lies flat -- takes up little space in a suitcase. > The light weight also means that you can let the hat hang on your back by the neck-strap (e.g., when you are in the shade and you want your hair to dry out on a hot day). I also have a "more fashionable" straw hat that I use for travel in more urban areas -- but it is heavier, and the neck-strap strangles me, if I let the straw hat hang on my back. > The full brim provides extra protection when the sun is low (i.e., early in the morning, or late in the afternoon) --- such as when fishing. CONS > Underside of the brim is the same color as the hat. A similar hat I have of a different brand is black below the brim, which reduces glare, and is particularly helpful when taking photos. > Removable neckstrap attaches by plastic fittings, which could potentially break --- probably not soon, but perhaps after a few years when the plastic dries out. > Neck flap is non-removable. Yes you can push the neck flap of the "Home Preferred" cap up into the crown, but then you've got a double thickness of fabric (holding in the heat) and you've blocked the ventilation vents in the crown. > The wide brim on the sides and back, plus the neck flap is a little bit redundant. That is, a "baseball"-type cap with a neck flap would provide nearly as good protection (at least when the sun is relatively high in the sky), and would be less subject to flying off in the wind. CONCLUSION > Seems to be a great hat for minimizing a combination of sun, heat, and insects. > Less ideal in windy conditions or when used without the neck flap (i.e., with the neck flap pushed up into the crown). AFTER ACTION REPORT > I wore the hat daily for about three weeks on a cruise of the Caribbean and Amazon River. Oddly, I rarely noticed mosquitoes, and did not need to use the neck flap as a bug barrier. I did notice that the hat caught a lot of wind, and would have blown away many times if not tightly secured with the neck strap (which I also ran under my uppermost shirt button for extra security). I'll consider a hat with a removable neckflap, or a "baseball-type" cap with a neckflap and neckstrap, if taking a similar trip in the future.

Very breathable and lightweight
This hat does exactly what I wanted it to do. It keeps the sun off my neck and my face. I spray a little bit of insect repellent on the cloth drop down in the back of the hat and it keeps all the mosquitoes away from my face. Perfect for fishing and working in the lawn.
