Good book but overpriced for little content

La autora ofrece instrucciones para completar cerca de 30 proyectos. Las instrucciones son claras, bien ilustradas y aunque ella usa acuarelas que tal vez no todos tengamos en casa, también ofrece alternativas para lograr los mismos resultados sin necesidad de tener costosas acuarelas. Me encanta este libro. Son más de 150 páginas con proyecto que sin duda ayudan me han ayudado mucho a mejorar mis técnicas de acuarela. Lo recomiendo ampliamente.

I’ve followed Sosha Davis on social media for a few years now and am really happy to finally have her book. Her work has inspired my own and it’s been fantastic to watch her grow over the years. She has helped me grow from a beginner watercolorist to intermediate. I’m grateful to her for listing the specific, artist grade materials she uses (most of which I already own…mostly due to watching her YouTube or Instagram and squinting at the names printed on paint tubes and ink bottles :P). In my opinion, Sosha’s masterful use of specific pigments is a large part of what makes her work so beautiful. Info about what materials she uses is valuable in and of itself...so much of art is experimenting with various materials to get a certain effect...this is part of the fun, but it can also be costly and time consuming. A word about specialty paints and this book: I won’t get on the soapbox about artist vs student and specialty pigments. I will say this though: I found Sosha as a beginner, and even though I learned techniques with my cheap palette of 40 colors for $30…I didn’t get the fantastic, beautiful results that resembled her work until I started using the same materials she uses. Of course I have my own style, but the complex, pigmented colors, the granulation, all that she masters so fully, I wasn’t even able to come close to, as a beginner, with my cheap palette. There is something to be said about learning about pigments and mixing and finding your own style, plus the first hand experience of learning the difference between artist vs student grade…and all of that is valuable. But if you’re an absolute beginner and just want to paint, I would keep these things in mind. Davis includes a few of her own diy color mixes in ratio proportions, on page 16. The book is beautiful and easy to understand. If you need a little more help, I’d recommend watching her YouTube or Instagram…sometimes seeing JUST how the brush is held, or moves across the paper, can help. And you want to make this book into a gift, please also pick up Daniel Smith’s Moonglow…you can find it in a half pan or a 10 mL or 15 mL tube. It’s not cheap, but it’s such a beautiful and unique product, you’ll find yourself creating pieces just to showcase how amazing it is…and Davis uses it a lot. (You CAN create you own mix, but sometimes we just want to PAINT!)
