The perfect first or second lego set for child
Combine this with lego set 10662 and you have the perfect set for introducing a child to lego. This set is very basic (almost too basic) but it is great for starting up a new collection. It contains a full palette of colors (except for gray), and the basic bricks will always find a use even as the child grows into a "lego maniac" and accumulates more specialized pieces.Compared to set 10662, this set has no "special" pieces (no wheels, slopes, or ornamental pieces). But this set can't be beat in terms of sheer brick count or weight per dollar. So if you can only get one, which would it be?Choose this set first if you or your child are completely new to lego and are not sure whether it will interest them. Also makes a good set if your child likes to build static sculptural things or mosaics. There are no ultra tiny pieces in this set, which is good if your child's dexterity is still developing or you're worried about pieces getting lost. Then as the child starts to enjoy the set, they can "graduate" to 10662 and appreciate the new possibilities it provides.Choose set 10662 first if your child is already familiar with and enjoys lego. For example, they already play with duplo or they play lego at a friend's house. Or you were a lego maniac as a child and are eager to start joining in the fun. Set 10662 allows much greater design variety and may hold your child's attention longer if they're already familiar with lego. Eventually they may start building bigger things and running out of pieces, at which point you can then pick up this set to beef up the raw materials for their creations.

Has value, but weighs toward smaller bricks
Good attributes-Good price per brick-All bricks, easy to manipulate-Over Lego quality-Has some variety in color and size-Fills need for a mid-sized brick setAspects I do not like-Heavy majority of bricks are in small size or standard color I bought this set nearly a year ago for my younger siblings to supplement their special pieces from sets with bricks, which the set accomplishes satisfactorily. As a whole the Lego bricks (these and others I have used) are easy to manipulate and last a long time, even with minor lapses of good care. Bricks in particular connect and disconnect easily without breaking apart, though creative use is limited by their number. I like the number of colors included and the size of this set. However, if you are looking for a greater ratio of 2x4 bricks or larger, or any kind of specialty piece, you might look elsewhere. if you are looking for a balanced brick set, this will do the job.

Great supplemental set for adding to a basic brick set
My son is 4 and recently graduated from Duplo blocks to "big boy" Legos, and we bought this set to supplement a basic brick starter bucket set. Right now, we really like the open ended play that he gets from building with basic brick pieces. He makes all kinds of buildings, objects, animals, etc. I'm in my 40s, and was an avid Lego builder when I was a kid, and we didn't have much more than basic brick sets to pick from for a very long time. The new specialty play sets are cool, but for right now, we like the creative exploration that basic bricks offer. This set provides a nice variety of colors and sizes to build lots of different things of varying sizes. Also, all the bricks could be contained in the basic brick starter bucket that we already had, so that makes storage easy. You can't go wrong with a basic brick supplemental set like this. It is nice to have the volume of pieces available to build anything you can imagine and you will always be able to get use out of them. We also bought the Bricks and More Fun With Vehicles Set 4635. With the added specialty vehicle pieces that set contained, my son has enjoyed hours of play...and so have we!

Complaints About Small Pieces
Many many people have rightly mentioned that the ratio of tiny- in fact the smallest made bricks, fill this set with very few of what most people consider to be 'the standard brick' size. In researching this- other sets of plain bricks both, available and retired...contain an equally small amount of the standard brick. Unless someone who works for the company wants to come forward with new information or Lego wants to make a new offering- there is not and apparently never was a bulk box that contained just standard size larger bricks- only combination with mostly smaller bricks. There are some kits still for sale that have more pieces overall than this one but the amount of large standard bricks even in other bulk boxes is the same; give or take literally one or two bricks. A bulk box of 1000 o so large bricks that so many people seem to long for, simply doesn't exist. It would be easier to build with if there were such a thing- but any set of plain bricks is full of mostly small pieces. By large brick I am not referring to the Duplo size...but the 'standard' regular brick 2x8 studs. A bulk box of this size brick of a single or mixed colors simply does not exist- at least as a new set. Perhaps someday this oversight will be corrected but for now people seem to be stuck with more small pieces than they would want. The basic idea behind the set- of free play and using your imagination to create whatever you want is still a good one, but a single bulk set of thousands of larger 2x8 bricks only is simply not available. If people realize this ahead of time they will be a lot less disappointed.. Hope this helps. As far as creative value and reuse- this still rates five stars; but whatever you want to build- there are not enough big bricks in this single set to build it.

great set for kids that dont like following instructions
great set for kids that dont like following instructions. pieces are divided in the box by size, so when i gave the set to the kids i put the bag of small pieces aside for when they were abit older.if you have a younger child who wants to play lego like their big prother or sister, but you don't want them chewing on the little pieces, this is the set for you.

Excellent basic Lego brick set!
I purchased a couple of these sets two Christmases ago for gifts for my nephews. These were really great- it was nice to find the Lego bricks that *don't* have a specific robot/dragon/transformer that they make. After a few years of buying my nephews various sets and then having them sit me down to make the various objects "correctly" I felt that this was much more encouraging for them to just be creative and make what they imagined, rather than feeling they needed to make whatever was the picture on the box. I purchased these generic sets in conjunction with three empty Lego storage totes and the flat building bases, and my nephews still play with these two years later. These are like the Lego bricks my siblings and I had as kids - there is a big mix of all the different sized pieces in different colours.I HIGHLY recommend this set and a base or two as a basic brick set for children.

great value
this Lego box is a great starter kit, good value, good variety of colors and sizes. The box is sturdy enough to store the pieces when not in use.
