The frame is wood with ridges (see texture in photo). It is painted solid black. The back is sturdy cardboard and has four easy hooks that remove the backing so you can place whatever you want into the frame. It also has a built-in stand, so you can place these on tables, bookshelves, mantle places, etc. It also comes with a small bag of pieces that allow you to mount the frame on the wall.The frames came packaged very securely for me - no broken or shattered frames despite others having experienced some broken frames in their packages. I used these frames for several college graduation awards I received and they look very clean and professional - outstanding value for the price!
