Clear and helpful!

As always, Jan Richardson's work is clear, detailed, and well researched. Her materials are always user-friendly and child-centered. Her webinars on Pioneer Valley's website are free and very helpful, too.

Powerful illumination of the "HEART" of Running Records

The Next Step Forward in Running Records by C.C. Bates, Maryann McBride and Jan Richardson has never been a more essential professional book than at this very moment. As Running Records have become a more common practice in our schools, it is not surprising to have seen it being misinterpreted and thus implemented in ways that often ignore qualitative analysis. This is unfortunately considering that it is this qualitative analysis that offers insight that will support and extend our observations while also informing responsive decision-making and next steps. The authors offer step by step details that are sure to return this "heart" to the Running Record process. I am so grateful for this incredible book and highly recommend it to educators everywhere!

An Important Addition to Jan Richardson's Next Step Collection

The Next Step Forward in Running Records is an important addition to the Scholastic Next Step collection of professional texts that support the theory, practice, and framework of Jan Richardson's powerful contribution to educational practice in the USA and worldwide for nearly three decades. With her coauthors, C.C. Bates and Maryann McBride, she has delivered an invaluable guide to the what, why, when, and how to administer running records. The current discussions surrounding MSV and the misinterpretations of the purpose and use of 'rr's' are addressed beautifully in Chapter 2: The Misunderstanding of MSV: Making the Case for Running Records. The authors have structured the 12 Chapters to lead educators through the steps of administration and the often neglected but crucial next step of analyzing and making informed instructional decisions using the gathered information. NSFRR is organized as a workbook making it user friendly, incredibly informative, and a must have for teachers, reading teachers, and literacy coaches.Ellen Lewis, Literacy Consultant and Author
